I have a 6 position M4 stock (newer stlye).  I want to change it to the older looking M4 stock that is only 4 position.  Can I just replace the stock or do I need a different tube?
Thanks

You would need to replace the tube also because it determines the amount of positions. Also you need to check the new stock you are going to buy and see if it is mil-spec or commercial so you can get the right buffer tube.

Fuck.

Eta

Aren't there any fucking older style M4 stocks that are 6 position and are identical in every way to a Colt?

Eta

Generic ones don't have those 2 little lines on them, the mil Colt ones do.  And right now I am trying to take off my buffer tube and having a hell of a time, it won't budge.  I am using one of those fucking castle nut wrenches and uh, I've tried stepping on it on concrete and pulling as hard as I can while still maintaining a firm grip and not let it slip and stay in the indentation on the nut.  Wow this is getting old.

why do you want to change it?

Because I want a very close M4 clone, minus the .2" of barrel length.

Commercial newer M4 stocks look different.  There is a curve torward the back of it.  Colt and LMT stocks are straight up, no curve.  But I like how the older stocks look, but I need the one with the 2 little lines on it, not a generic crappy one.

It depends what tube you already have.

I have a newer 6 position M4 stock that has a milspec tube.  A older CAR style stock (or old M4 stock) will fit right on the tube no problem.  Matter of fact all milspec stocks either, M4 or CAR should interchange on a milspec 6 position tube no problem.

The problem arises when using the longer commercial 6 position tubes on the CAR stock as the tube will stick out past the back of the stock when colapsed.

So you're saying, if I have a milspec tube with a 6 position stock, I can throw on a 4 position stock as long as it is milspec dimension?

Is the castle nut staked?

That is correct.  If you have a 6 position milspec tube and it looks like the rear of the first pic then you can use any of the milspec stocks.

I see, so mil-spec collapsible stock tubes are shorter than commercial ones, since my commercial tube is flush with my 6 position newer M4 stock.  But it will go into the different positions fine no matter if it is a 4 position or 6 position.  Thanks a lot for the info man.

Yes I think it is staked, very well? Or loctite?

Is it common to have a Commercial stock on a milspec tube?  I think this is done, because my CMMG stock looks commercial, but the tube is Alumnimum.  I think this would increase rattle, as the tube is smaller than it should be compared to larger, commercial stock.

It may be, the important dimension is DIAMETER when determing 'mil-spec' vs 'commercial' not length.

I'd say it's not uncommon, but no it's not common.  Usually when a MFG puts on a mil-spec receiver extension he uses a mil-spec stock body (for example companies that use CMT stocks).

However, some of us prefer to run the stronger mil-spec receiver extensions and use the 'commercial' Cav-Arms stocks to get stock colors other than Black.  Yes it's possible some of them are looser than mil-spec stocks but I've never had a problem with it..  Some of the 'rattle' can be cured by heating the stock (heat gun or boiling water) then squeezing down on the area the ridge rides in (say in a vice).  It doesn't take a lot but it reduces rattle - as will a strip or two of electrical tape on the reciever extension.

Yes I know about the more important difference in diameter.

Also, all I wanted to know is if I can use a mil spec 6 position tube for an older 4 position stock (mil dimension).  Yes I can?

What determines how many positions your stock is, is how many holes are in the bottom of the receiver extension, not the stock.  You just need to match commerical stock with commercial extension, and vice versa.

You just want a basic M4-looking setup?

I've this on mine, and it works without any problems.

$25 before 10% off if you have the "buyers club" membership.

And, if your castle nut is staked, you're probably going to bugger up the castle nut finish, along with galling up the threads on the buffer tube.  Doesn't matter though, because the link I posted above, comes with a COMPLETE setup.

IF you decide to go back, then just get a new buffer tube for your six-position.  They're not THAT expensive.

OP. The looks of the stock body don't always tell you what you're getting. Either or between the M4 & CAR stocks may be able to fit on mil-spec or commercial tube with varying positions. The newer "4 pos" stocks that I've seen based on what you're looking for were Leapers (Cheaper Than Dirt). The old school ones were Fyberlite or aluminum. I haven't paid much attention to the "newer" ones to tell if had the reinforcing lines molded into them or not.

Those are most certainly mil-spec in dimension.

The singular best way to set-and-forget is to buy a 6 pos mil-spec tube.
Sell you commercial stock/tube on the EE and be done with it.
