This is most likely a silly question but what is the significance of the assorted forging marks on the right side of upper receivers?

So far i have taken notice of a key hole (on M1S) and an odd shape (on RRA), pluse there are most likely others that I simply have not paid attention to as well.

i have read others mentioning that their receiver has this or that mark.  What do they mean/indicate?

Thanks,
MLG

They are the marks or fingerprints so to speak for the various foundries that make the raw forgings for manufacturers to machine/finish or contract out to have that work done for them. A manufacturer can have receivers with various forge marks. Some foundries place their forgemark in addition to a code (usually an initial) for certain manufacturers, i.e., Colt & FN, before the receiver is finished into the end product. Search forge marks & there should be a list of them that pop up. HTH.
