My barrel is an ER Shaw, 24" Stainless steel,  fluted 24 inch varmint heavy barrel with 1/12 twist chambered in .204 Ruger. I see a lot of barrels that are a 1/9 twist or whatever... Can I get an opinion on this barrel concerning the 1/12 twist?

Well it has a 1 in 12 twist because it is chambered for the .204 ruger not the .223.

I would imagine a 1:9 twist .204 would probably over stress the bullets.

Think about it this way. The heavier the bullet is for the caliber the faster the twist rate needs to be to stabilize the bullet.

For example if you were shooting a .223 with a 77gr bullet you would probably want a barrel with a 1 in 8 or 1 in 7 twist.

If you were shooting a .223 with a 45gr bullet you would probably want a barrel with a 1 in 12 or 1 in 9 twist.

Since your .204 bullets are very light the barrel has a slower twist (1 in 12)

There is alot of debate about what twist will shoot what bullet weight accurately but this should give you a good start.

Stadard twsit for 140-150 grain .308 bullets is 1/12.  Its not just weight.  Its length to diameter ratio.

Thank you DevL, I got a little confused when I started thinking about that.
