I have narrowed down my search for my first AR to be a RRA Entry Tactical R-4 16" barrel. However, after looking at three separate dealers in Atlanta, I can't find one that has a chrome lined barrel. All I can find are ones that have a Chrome-Moly lined barrel. I really want this gun, but don't know if I should just buy the one that is CM lined and forget about it. I can't even find one mail order and pay the transfer fee to my dealer. How important is my choose other than a little bit better accuracy and easer cleaning? For me, I don't think a little bit more accurate will even show, with my shooting abilities. Thanks David J |

I think it a good riffle for the money & I like the two stage trigger, just to name a few. I plan on changing the front rail to either a Daniels or LaRue, add a fold down rear site, and then possible add a Trijicon or EOTech site. I will build my next one, but I want to buy a complete riffle to begin with. dj |

Barrels are (1) Chrome Moly - the whole barrel is made of chrome moly steel, not chrome moly lined. (2) Chrome Lined - the barrel is the same chrome moly steel as above (yes, I know, 4140, or 4150) with a chrome lining in the bore and chamber. This chrome is not bright and shiny like a car bumper, but dull, looking more like silver paint. (3) Stainless Steel - and SS barrels are not chrome lined. Actually, the steels most often used for SS barrels are low grade stainless, and are closer to a chrome moly than a true stainless. They are more rust resistant than chrome moly. Stainless Steel barrels are more accurate for two reasons, (a) they machine in such a way that it is easier to produce an accurate bore, and (b) they are usually made in a "bull barrel" or target contour. A barrel of any material is more accurate in such a heavy contour, but barrels specifically meant to be target barrels are made from stainless and of a heavy contour. To try to compare such a barrel to, for example, a government profile M4 barrel, is meaningless. BUT, there is one manufacturer, Olympic Arms, who make the more "normal" contours in stainless steel, with a black oxide coating that can be compared to other barrels. And they shoot very similarly. I have barrels of all three materials, and in different contours. You just can't tell a real world difference in the material of the barrel if the contours are the same. So, mark accuracy considerations off your list in choosing barrel material. If you want a rifle for target grade accuracy, go for a bull barrel or at least, an HBAR contour. If you want a rifle that has a more normal contour, one you can carry around, pick one. My experience is that they are all easy to clean. All of my rifles get 6 strokes of the bore brush whether they need it or not. And they all get 15-20 seconds of the chamber brush on the end of an electric drill, whether they need it or not. I line them up on the bench and clean them all the same. I don't discriminate. I am an equal opportunity rifle cleaner. I live in a humid area and like the Oly Stainless Steel barrels, but as I said, I have others that work as well. |
| If you are wanting to buy your first AR complete so you get the warranty and if you want a RRA, LMT, or Stag give Pete @ Legal Transfers a try in the Equipment Exchange. He is very helpful and there is a good chance that he will have what you want in stock or he will be able to get it very quick. I ordered a RRA from him with a stainless steal barrel and a bunch of other upgrades. He told me it would be 12-16 weeks. I said alright and it was here in 9 weeks. I love my RRA rifle and the price was definitely right. |
This is the way to go and Adco has the upper in stock here |
That's where I bought mine from. |
yes PK is the best i've delt with so far

Unless you e-mail them asking how to place an order via e-mail paying with a money order. Guess what, you will get no response. So my money went to Adco and I am happy it did. And it will continue to go to Adco, they have anything I need that PK does and they don't suck at Cust Serv. |

I've done business with both companies, and if it's something I can get from Adco, that's where I would spend my money. |
| i have sold off all of my "compromises" to upgrade. overall, i gained a lot of experience (benefit) but lost time and money (cost). compromises have taught me to save up as much as i can for as long as my patience can stand while waiting to get what i really want. |
everything i've ever ordered has been in stock and on my doorstep in 3 days, i live i BF georgia and they are in Ill. that's pretty good in my book, i am planning on some barrel work with Adco, everyone around here keeps say they are the best |

Thanks for the information guys. I had called Pete @ Legal Transfers two weeks ago, unfortunately he didn't have one and said it would probably be 12 to 16 weeks at best. I called Lee @ Tucker Guns, he has everything but the chrome lined. He also said it would be quite a wait also. I appreciate the ADCO site. I had not heard of them before. After spending a little time there, I will probably use them in the near future. Looks like a great place. At this point I am probably going to just bite the bullet and buy one. Like I said I am going to build one in the next couple of weeks. Considering LMT, LaRue, Magpul and a few other company's as a build. At that time I will just order a chrome lined barrel. dj |
