Why do some hammers have the notch cut in the front and some don't. I understand the deal with the M16 type with the hook on the back side. Just wondering if that notch cut out actually serves a purpose and if not...?

They are for unshrouded carriers - it hooks the exposed firing pin in the unlikely event of hammer-follow.
