Hello Good People,
I'm pondering a AR-15 purchase and need some advice.  A local dealer is asking $1025 for a bushy M4 A3 with heavy barrel and detachable handle, collapsible stock.

Does this sound like a ball park good deal?

About $125 too high.

Yea, Gander Mountain wants 1120 for a Bushy M4...though you can do much better online. 900 dollar range shouldn't be a problem.

Ok, thanks folks.  I'm new to the EBR world.  Educate a brother about how to find the best deal online.  I'd like to support my local shop, but I don't want to shell out more than what is reasonable (a personal decision, I know!)

Thanks!

My local shop actually has better deals than I have been able to find online.  Got the same rifle for $950 a week ago.

It appears that you might be from Colorado (Cololeadslinger). Have you checked out Jensen Arms or 5280 Armory?

I was at Jensens on Friday.  The service was a bit impersonal - not really willing to educate a newbie like myself.  I value good service.  The shop I've been working with in the past (Gunsport in Boulder), has great service, but I'm afraid they are asking too much for the bushy.  Seemed to push RRA pretty hard, and said that because they are a dealer for RRA, that they can sell them cheaper than most everyone else.  Because I'm so new to the game, I couldn't tell the difference between what is good stuff and what is being sold to me.  I wish I had an older brother that could say, "get this for this price."  John Farnam said go with DPMS.  The Boulder shop said that Bushmaster was a better rifle.  Jensen's was all about RRA.

Jeez...

besides a few minor differences in material, etc, both bushy and RRA are good brands; imo, RRA is the better bang for the buck

Bushy is usually overpriced for what they are but generally a good purchase & serve most well. If you want that particular rifle & don't care what you pay for it then make it a good deal for you. If not then your best bet for a lower price is more often than not going to be found online these days...with a few expceptions. Not from a chain store who are usually at or near MSRP. Even some local dealers will not come off of their prices too much (at least this is the case in my AO & I live in a large city). Therefore, it's online shopping for me or I'm taking a drive down the old hard ball for an hour or two.

If you like your local dealer, make them an offer.  The most they can do is say no.

My local gun shop has BM's on the shelf for right at a grand the is another down the road that averages 1100 bucks. Some guns they have at good prices some not so much. Anymore it seems like one of the vender's here on this site have some of the better deals...you just have to add in shipping and see what price comes in lower.

I'm always a fan of the "if your a newby, go DPMS"  My first was a DPMS and i beat the shit out of it while learning the Do's and Do Nots.  Then upgraded to an LMT  and never looked back!  In the AR world, you "usually" get what you pay for....i say usually in qoutes.

The best Advice i can give, buy what you want.  Or buy what you need if you don't know what you want.

This is my first post on this forum, I'm impressed with the response thus far.  Is a heavy barrel worth the extra expense/weight?  My wife needs to be able to shoot it well, and it needs to be portable and functional for a bug out scenario.  I've heard so many different opinions about RRA being better than Bushmaster, and Bushmaster being better than RRA, and so on.  It is hard to distill the info - maybe tell me why you like one brand over another?

Also, am I on the right track regarding the features and such for a defense weapon (16", collapsible stock, detachable handle/iron sights)?

Thanks and keep it coming!

I'd skip out on the hbar. Everything else is usually the norm. Keep doing your research & you should be able to make a fairly informed decision. Go to a few dealers & hold a few different brands to determine what type fits you & yours the best. Some dealers will let you shoot a shop queen too so you'll have an even more informed decision to make.

You guys are rock stars.  Thanks so much.  I'm suffering a bit from analysis paralysis, but I'll figure it out before too long.

Thanks!
