I am looking into purchasing my first AR15. Just something to shoot in the back yards with friends, I don't need anything special just something that's fun to shoot. It won't see any harsh weather or conditions of any kind.
I am looking at these two rifles right now and am wondering which one is better for someone on a budget.
DPMS Panther Lite 16 vs Olympic Arms K3B

I've heard bad things about Olympic's quality but it seems to be on their older rifles and not so much on their newer stuff.

I appreciate any and all help that is given. I currently own only pistols so I am new to rifles all together.

I'm no expert by any means, but it seems less people have problems with DPMS than with Oly just from what I read on here.  I have never owned, nor fired either, so I can't speak to the quality of their rifles, only to say that most people who own DPMS rifles seem to love them.  I'd say for the type of activity you are talking about, you can't go wrong with a Panther.

Agreed.  DPMS had their quality issues a few years ago, but they've come a long way.  Probably further than any other manufacturer, considering where they started.

I still here people talking about Oly, though I haven't seen a newer example lately.

I like DPMS for the money, but...

If you're only going to have one AR you should consider this rule.  Buy right the first time and you buy once and cry once.

I would recommend a CMMG Bargain Bin. Excellent quality + value.

Save the green stamps and buy more top shelf quality.  RRA, Bushmaster, Colt, Armalite, etc, are a bit more than what you are asking but you get what you pay for.  You'll be happier in the end.  I've been hearing good things about the CMMG bargin bin so that would be another option.  Good luck.

In addition to the good ideas already listed above I suggest you take a look at the Smith and Wesson M&P15's. With the $100 rebate going on now they're a good value.

I forgot to mention the CMMG bargain bin rifles.  I would highly suggest these as well, as it seems every person that has bought one is pleased.  You can't beat it for 620.00

I would take a new $650 S&W M&P over a bulk bin rifle

The only way I'd buy an M&P is if I could test fit a PMag in the magwell, and I'd need more time to read on them.  I remember seeing a few posts regarding jamming, but the guns have a warranty so that's probably a moot point.  The Magwell issue isn't something I would budge on though.  $650 for a gun with a warranty is a good deal though.

mine takes pmags as well as any other mag.  and has never jammed once.    the issue was with the early s/n's and the old Stag supplied parts and is a moot point now.

Must have a helluva back yard. I have $720 in a Saber Defence A-2. IMO a better rifle than anything mentioned. In fact I have 4 Sabers..If they can build all the MA-Deuce barrels for our boys, they can build my AR.

Wow, it's going to take me some time to really read through all these posts to get all the information from them.
Thank you everyone for your great input, this is exactly what I was hoping for.

One question though, I did some searching for the S&W M&P for seven hundred some dollars and then a hundred dollar rebate and couldn't find anything about it online. Could someone direct me in the right direction for this?

Thanks Again Everyone!

OK, there are more posts about the S&W rifles in the last 3 months than all other inquiries combined (or just about).

Try searching for the whole story, but the short version is CMT used to make them for S&W, and there were some reports of QC issues with the first ones.

Now they are mostly made in-house at S&W, and even Pat Rogers has written of some very compelling anecdotal evidence that they are among the best commercial rifles out there.

That optics ready version seems too good to be true with the $100 rebate.

i've owned colt, shot bushies and RRA and dpms and oly....I sold my colt but I have an RRA....total zen, its all in the weight and the trigger, find the cheapest one with the best balance/weight feel to you and a good trigger and dont look back.

I always swore my ak was my fav, after owning the RRA though I'm actually considering selling the ak.

I personally like the skinny handguards over the fat ones, dont know why, the feel I guess, but I'd say go for the cheapest one that "feels" right in your hands, good balance and trigger pull.

This will probably require you to personally check every rifle on the rack at the shop but if they are good people they wont mind.

I've been searching and trying to read through all the posts on them but I still don't see any links to retailers selling them or which retailers have the rebate.
