I'm new to the AR, as well as to this forum. From what I've gathered so far, I know that the topic of cheap ARs isn't a popular one among AR fans, but I have a question about a “cheap” AR. I may have an opportunity to buy a like new High Standard AR-15 in M4 configuration for $500. I can find no wear anywhere on the rifle, and I doubt that it’s been shot much at all. The only review I can find on this brand is a GunBlast article which spoke well of it. Can any of you tell me anything about the High Standard AR. Are they considered decent? I know the parts used aren't top of the line, but are they at least considered "functional". I’m not a “tinkerer”, so the only reason I want it, is to have an example of the AR platform for range fun, and maybe defense. The rifle will be left as it is, with no modifications other than to add a sling. Also, I can’t help but wonder if a new ban will come through at some future point, so I like the idea of getting one now. From what I’ve gathered on a couple of other forums, the HS brand is not exactly well thought of, but still the feedback I’ve got concerning this topic, is that it would be worth buying for $500. I would appreciate any feedback that any of you have concerning the High Standard AR, and whether or not they are considered decent, functional guns. On a positive note, I don’t see them mentioned in the same negative AR’ threads like Vulcan, etc., but then I don’t see much mention of the High Standard at all. Is this because they are relatively new, or just not well thought of? What is the quality of the High Standard. If anyone is interested, here is a link to a thread I posted over at GT that shows pictures of the bolt carrier/key and buffer, as well as the gun itself. glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?p=10136998#post10136998 Thanks for any feedback. If nothing else, I figure that if I can get some responses, that these threads will at least assist the next newbie looking at the High Stqandard, who can't find any information on the brand. |

Dennys guns is/was selling the HS AR15s. They told me personally that they liked them better than Olympic. Those guys know what they are talking about....... If you get one you must write a range report and let us know what you think. ETA- your link didnt take me to anything AR. |
| I appreciate the response. I did take it out to the range the other day. This is my first experience with an AR, and I hadn't even taken the time to tear it down before taking it for a quick 10 minute range session. I had a stovepipe, on the first round, but the remaining 19 fired without any issues. A friend who had shot it previously (1 magazine) experienced the same stovepipe on the first round, and the rest fine. Afterward, I fieldstripped it, and noticed that there appeared to be no wear anywhere in the gun. I wonder if it had really been fired to any extent previously. I also noticed that the thing was bone dry, and didn't appear to have any lubricant at all. I cleaned it (although it didn't seem dirty), and lubed it up. I'm hoping that the stovepipe was the result of lack of lubrication and nothing more. I won't have time to get more ammo, and get it back to the range until next week. I expect it to do fine, but will post a much more thorough range report after I have time to put a decent amount of ammo through it. I was impressed with the fit and finish of the rifle, even though, from what I've read fit and finish is secondary to more important things such as parts, etc. Also from what I've read, and been told the $500 price tag seems reasonable, even if it isn't a top tier brand. |

lack of lube will make any gun jam eventually. Three cheap trouble shooting tips you can first to try to remedy this problem. 1) Go to your local gun shop and buy a couple new extractor springs w/ black bumpers. After you have those, go to Lowes and buy a couple #006 or 1/4" OD x 1/8" ID x 1/16" width and install them around your extractor spring. This will increase the strength of the extractor. 2) Install magpul followers in all of your mags. 3) Probably the most important tip. Shoot quality ammo if you are not. |

For those interested OP's link goes to page 4 of his thread. Earlier pages have pics of interest. The bolt and cam pin slot are bone dry. First thing I would try is lube it properly and try it with quality ammo. The owners manual should explain how. If the manual doesn't come with it, go to AR15.com homepage and follow the link to manuals. Once there you can download various owners manuals as well as the Army operators manual in PDF form. It should work fine, if not try the troubleshooting steps. Good luck. |

I really do appreciate the tips. I spent some additional time lubricating the gun. Right now, I only have FP-10, but there seems to be some better choices in lube. If the problem persists, I will check out the troubleshooting suggestions. Yes, the link does start with page 4, just look to the top or the bottom of the page to go to pages 1-3. I just added a picture of the feedramps to page 4. Other pages include pictures of the bolt carrier, and staked key. Also the bushing, which like the feedramp appears to be "standard" items, as well as a picture of the gun itself. I thought since I've found so little info on the High Standard AR-15, that I'd include such pictures in my original post on Glock Talk, to assist people like myself, who are considering purchasing the HS. Potential buyers, will at least know the type, fit and finish of the gun and its essential components. Not included in the original thread, is that the HS does not have a chromed barrel. Not sure how important this is to a casual shooter like myself. I've really started from scratch in regard to the AR. I know next to nothing about the AR, so this has been an ongoing learning process for me. The thread has gotten some good feedback, that hopefully will be helpful to prospective buyers. I think that's where I also got the recommendation to check here at AR15.com. I did not get a copy of the owners manual, so I go will go to the links suggested. This site has been quite helpful in learning about the AR. Thanks again. |

BR870 Aka, deMontacute, Yes, and because of you I'm pretty much convinced that I don't want to pass up this dealhave I just wish there were more reviews available concerning the High Standard. Seems that not many people have bought them so far. I was hoping to find some owners here. |

ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=118&t=362023 www.gunblast.com/HighStandard-AR15.htm HS is new, but I haven't seen anything negitive about them so far. Most users have said they compare favorably to the other 2nd tier makers... |
