Who currently makes a quality 7.62x39 upper. I already have an AR in 308 & 223 but wanted to get something for this caliber since it seems to be cheaper at this time. I know from reading here that the mags are the main problem with this configuration. I talked to Bushmaster and they said that the 7.63x39 ACR(masada) will be out later this year but I dont want to buy a whole gun. Armalite says they are working on one but no release date yet. Any info (pros and cons) would be appreciated.

Why????  Do you have a reason or are you just saying this because you "heard" bad things?

So far I've read nothing but good about Model 1 Sales 7.62x39 uppers.

Del-Ton, DPMS, Model 1 Sales and Olympic Arms offer standard 7.62x39 uppers. Armalite had one at SHOT, but it's yet to become available. I've seen mention of a DoubleStar 7.62x39 upper, but it's not on their website. And Colt made them, but they discontinued that some time ago.

My Model 1 Sales 7.62x39mm upper has ~1500 rounds through it with zero non-magazine related malfunctions. It's a great rifle, easily one of my favorites as it smokes my SKSs and AK for both accuracy and ergonomics.

You can use a standard 5.56 mag with 7 rounds, C Products has new 10 rounders available, their 30 rounders are said to become available in April and the no longer in production USA 20 and 30 round frankenmags work just fine.

MGI makes a modular lower that is a pricey avenue that allows the use of AK mags, but I'll stick with the AR magazine system. They also make a bolt/firing pin combo optimized for the hard primed eastern european steel case ammo.

If C Products' 30 round magazines fill the bill, I expect this configuration may well jump in popularity.

Thanks MMcfpd. That is just the information I was looking for. I have a SKS but not too many rounds through it. I like the ergonomics of the AR and think that it would be more accurate.

I picked up a Double Star lower this last weekend and am going to go with something bigger than the 5.56. I also have an AR in 5.56 so I don;t see the need for 2 similar firearms in the same caliber. I had considered the 6.5 or 6.8 but I will end up with the 7.62x39 since it is the cheapest, and dirtiest, ammo available right now which to me makes it a good choice for stockpiling.

Thanks for the posts of manufacturers to look at.

A while back my uncle gave me almost 900 rounds of 7.62. I dont have a rifle chambered for it. i didnt want to sell it and i remember a thread about arfcommers being required to have rounds for a weapon they dont own. couldnt leave it lyin round so built one. i got a stripped upper from the EE and a dpms 20" heavy barrel from midway. i got a mag, lpk, 7.62 bolt, gas block, tube and all required pins plus a yhm free float rail from delton. so far ive only got 350 in it. i say build it yourself man. afterall, aint that what its about?
