So the Assault rifle ban was lifted in 2004; making AR15's available for purchase at gun shops. Does this mean it wasn't possible to attain an AR15 before that? or was it a class III weapon requiring the special procedures? did Gun shops carry them pre-2004?

Does anyone else feel our rights to buy these kind of weapons is going to go out the door pretty soon? They are already pushing anti-gun laws on us like in D.C. right now & I was hoping to hear from someone that has been a collector of assault rifles through the changing times.

any1 care to share their thoughts on the issue?

From what I remember, you could still obtain an AR in states that allowed them, but only with the post ban features.

EDIT: for spelling

ETA: Only hope you (we) have of avoiding a repeat is to stay on top of it and put as much pressure on your representatives as is practical to let them know where they will end up come next election.

You haven't been keeping up with whats going on around the nation lately have you?

ETA:  Yes, in most states you could still purchase an AR-15 any day of the week.  Legally, it could not have a flash suppressor, bayonette lug, or magazine that held more than 10 rounds.  No collapsing stocks either.

Most people referred to these as neutered.

They were not considered class 3 and nothing special was required to purchase them beyond what was required to purchase a bolt action hunting rifle.

The ban was not 'lifted' it sunset.

ARs were perfectly fine to manufacture and sell with all the 'evil features' up to 13 Sept 1994.  At that time the ban went into effect, but the only way it could get passes was with a 'sunset clause' - after 10 years the law would automatically expire unless Congress renewed it.  In 2004 Congress could not get an extension through (thanks to the Gingrich revolution ).

Anyway during the ban AR-15s were sold.  If they were manufactured prior to the ban you could still have things like telestocks and flash supressors.  ARs manufcatured during the ban years lacked flash supressors, bayonet lugs, and telestocks.  So we had to live with bare barrels (or horribly loud muzzle brakes), no bayonets and fixed stocks.

Also during this time no new magazines with capacities over 10 rounds could be manufactured, so pre-ban magazine prices skyrocketed.  People got into refinishing old magazines (which normally would have been trashed), and buying surplus mags from Singapore, the UK, and Isreal.

Thankfully the ban has sunset - but we must remain ever vigilant to ensure it doesn't happen again.

Sadly, my state has a ban in effect that mirrors the old federal AWB.

While nothing has been decided yet, it appears that gun owners have reason to celebrate.

The Supreme Court heard the most important 2nd amendment case in U.S. History yesterday and it sounded like things were going to go our way.

Also, it's election year.  Democrats know that gun control is a losing issue for them, they won't touch it until next year.

Hillary is unelectable and Obama just soaked his campaign in gas an lit the match yesterday by basically saying that everything his racist preacher had to say over the last 20 years was just hunky dory by him.

Including such pearls as:  "god-damn America"  "Whites created AIDs and use it as a genocide tool against blacks" there were several other good ones but those were my favorite.

Rejoice my friend, today is a good day to be a gun owner.
