Friend of mine just called with aColt AR for sale.  It was purchased by him new in the early to mid 80's and he says its an SP-1????.  He doesn't know AR's very well so all I know prior to looking is the SP-1 thing and it has a fixed carry handle and 20" barrel.  Anyone know anything about the SP-1?? or where I might go to get a value before I waste my time going to look at the weapon.  I know that the weapon is in near if not in 100% condition and has been fired less the 300 rds.  Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Check in the Retro forum.

The SP 1 is marked SP 1 on the lower, and it's a large hole, slabside lower. The pivot pin will be a double headed screw, rather than a captive pin, and the diameter will be slightly larger than the rear pin.

Slickside upper with A1 sights, 20" 1/12 barrel, and most likely an A1 birdcage flash suppressor.  Triangle handguards and A1 length stock.  They are good weapons, though the 1/12 rifling limits them somewhat with ammo, and the large hole receivers make it more complicated to switch out configurations.

Go to the retro forum and you will find pictures of a SP1  (or use google).

They are neat, fun, light rifles. Most surplus (when available is 55 FMJ). Buy it and you won't regret it. My guess on value based upon condition stated would be $1000 give or take a $100.

I have one and it's my favorite AR.  They go for 1200-1500 range depending on their condition.
