I just got done assembling my first AR.

I haven't bought any ammo yet but I put a snap cap in it. I have one question.

When I have the snap cap in the bolt/carrier will not go all the way forward unless I push hard on the forward assist is this normal with snap caps. I don't want to install live ammo because Im worried that it will bump fire it with having to push the forward assist so hard.

Welcome!

First of all Fail because of no pics!

Have you tried to load a single round off of a magazine yet? Snap caps probably dragging on the magazine.

Is the extractor going over the rim and engaging it?  Try placing the rim of the snap cap under the extractor manually with the bolt open.  Hold the base of the snap cap against the face of the bolt as you slowly close the bolt into the barrel extension.  Tap on the forward assist to lock the bolt in battery.  You can also do this with the rifle receivers opened up and just push on the back of the bolt carrier with your fingers. You can use a dummy cartridge if you suspect the snap cap may be out of proper dimensions. If bolt will not lock with reasonable force, something is wrong.  Probably short headspace, chamber not reamed correctly.
