I have been wanting to buy just a standard 20 inch rifle, I went to the local gun store today and they have 2 20 inch colts marked as follows,

Colt Sporter                   This one priced at 1050.00
Target Model
0373xx
Cal .223  and

Colt Sporter                   This one priced at 1550.00
Target Model
0771xx
Cal. 223

Both rifles appear to have been used very little both have fashiders, and bayo-lug with fixed stocks, they are both A2 config,  any help with when these were made or if selling price is close would be appreciated.

a little confused, pappy

My reference material suggest a Model 6551, but it was issued without a bayo lug.

With Colt is wise to avoid 'never' and 'always' , but it is possible a different upper is in place here - or your prospective buys are transitional samples.

The date range is likely about 1990 on the 1st one and about '93 or so on the 2nd. These were among the last of the pre-ban rifles.

Pricing is dependent on originality, and in my opinion they are priced in the high range.

While no expert on what these are worth, I have seen them go for as little as $700 - $800 and as much as $1,800 for cherries.

Here is one for no more than $1,200 ---> Gunbroker ad

and another without bidders in first 10 days ----> another GB ad for a Sporter Target

To show how squirrely these things canbe, one of those has a fenced lower with sear block and the other no block or fence.

I share your zeal for the 20" Colt's but look around a bit more to be sure you get your money's worth.

thankyou for the help, I thought they were priced high also. I have no experience with the whole preban colt thing.

anytime pappy

IMHO,The pre-bans should only command high prices in States with current AWBs. (NY, MA, NJ, the usual suspects)

If I were a relatively new buyer, I would recommend a new Colt LE model, as they are the collectors of the future - especially if you are hedging against political change.

The new models are everything a military issue rifle is, less the automatic fire component.

But many are history buffs, and sentimental about rifles made popular in their .mil service days. This is why the SP1's and XM177 copies are all the rage today. Seriously, some guys in the Retro Forum here have some awesome rifles and built or bought them at a reasonable rate.

Keep us posted.
