I overheard a man at local  gun show saying you could somehow adjust the fit of AR receivers to eliminate slop and play, and something about different sizes of pivot pins ? Anyone heard of this ? Thanks, Jim

Armalite Tech Notes, from the Library at www.armalite.com

A few quotes from Tech Note #55: Receiver Tightness

"There is an intuitive belief that a tight fit between the upper and lower receivers is essential to accuracy, and that loose fit is bad. Oddly enough, this is untrue."

"...but normal forging and machining variations may result in a small amount of play between the receivers or slight side to side receiver mismatch."

And concluding:

"Receivers will normally exhibit a certain amount of looseness. This is normal and will not affect accuracy. Shooters may reduce the movement by insertion of a small amount of material between the receivers to improve the feel of the rifle, but it won’t improve accuracy."

Thanks to Mark Westrom of Armalite for this great resource.

I bought some 4 cent o rings at the hardware store and put them on my upper where the pivot pin lug is. Takes all the play out of the rifle, was cheap, not permanent, and if you don't like it you're out less than a nickel.

+1 on the #7 O-rings....put one on the front take-down pin of my Stag 2T & it reduced the tiny bit of wobble that was there, but I can still pop out the pins by hand, so it's not overly tight.  I like it better than the Accuwedge I tried.

79 cents at Home Depot, Lowes, etc...

The O-rings snap with use & generally only temporarily "fix" the slop which isn't an issue as far as proper function of the rifle is concerned in the first place. Just deal with the slop & drive on.
