Are groups always taken with optics?  Does anyone bother checking groups while shooting with irons?  (Talking here about ~100y, from a bench).  If so, what have you guys seen for standard divergence in group sizes when going from optics to irons?

Thanks

With the same weapon, ammo, conditions, and freshly washed lucky underwear, I usually have 2/3 the group size with powered optics as compared to irons. Ex) a 1.5" will go down to 1". With 1 power optics like an Eotech, groups aren't much, if any smaller for me. YMMV

When shooting A2 uppers, I am stuck with irons.  Its all about eyesight.  I used to shoot better than I do now, but I was much younger then too, when I had good eyesight, and when I did not have tremors.   Now, I am a mediocre shot.

Still, irons will shoot well.  Keep the same fuzzy picture as best as you can, and you should get the best groups possible, with irons.

Iron sights, 20 rounds @ 300 yards.

I do all my testing with competition rifles using their irons. For me, shooting well with irons depends on the target and the sights themselves. I have shot .5 MOA groups at 200 yards with competition sights using a front aperature mounted on an AR Spacegun prone with a sling. A2 sights take a bit more work for me due to the short sight radius and my older eyes combined with that front post. But it feels damn good to see a string of Xs come up competing at 600 yards with a Service Rifle.

Make sure you have a distinct easy to see target, blacken your sights and have fun!
