Well, I wasn't expecting this website to work on this computer......go MWR!!!

Guys, been a while and am having a blast looking around the site, but my time is limited so here it goes......

Currently in Balad, Iraq...LSA Anaconda and am running into a "preference" problem when out on my patrols.  Basically....I need an optic....something simple....a "cheapy"..under $100.  We have all the red dot crap, but I need a "more powerful" aka MAGNIFIED scope.  We are not doing the door kicking stuff.....we are doing presence patrols, checking up on IA checkpoints, things of that nature.  This means, the quick aquisition stuff is not usually what we run into.  My typical scenario is having to take a quick glance down dirt roads or up onto a rooftop a few hundred meters away, etc.    Sure, I can use binos, but that means bringing my weapon down....I want something I can scan with (to include my rifle) and aquire a target also...if need be at reasonable range.  I don't have time nor the resources to do my own homework right here/now.  My requirements...under $100, illuminated crosshairs...magnification around the 6-9X range, and able to "bolt on" standard A2 style carry handle....no mounting rings, etc.  Also, website/info on where I can get it!!  I know this is an optics thing...mods forgive me but I can't get into that section for whatever reason.

THANKS.....STILL KICKING!

I can't answer your question as to what you can get with those option for under 100, just wanted to say have fun over there brother.  Come home safe.

First of all, thanks for your service and come home safe. Secondly, i dont know of a variable scope that will "bolt on" to the A2 without the use or an Arms M16 mount or simular which would add $. This is the only thing that comes to mind that is in budget and is a well made scope that will go on an A2 with no other hardware.

ETA: I had the non-illuminated version which workes well. It held zero consistently, didnt fog(you probley wont have that problem in Iraq), and the glass is surprisingly clear. Hope this helps.

Man, I am sorry, but I seriously doubt ANYTHING can be had (that's worth a crap) for under a hundred,  that fits all your requirements.

Any good scope is better then irons if it is not delicate.  Even a Weaver K-4  ($138) will allow you to see a LOT better at night and in dim light then a peep sight.
Mounting the thing on an A-2 upper is not a problem, but again, it's going to cost some.  I would have to say that to get a scope that is somewhat rugged, and a mount you will have to spend about $200 minimum.

Any of you other guys have any thoughts on this?  If i am wrong, I'd like to know myself.

You need a Leupold or an ACOG.  $100 won't get you there.

+1

Hakko has demonstrated pretty awesome QC and quality for a sub-100 buck scope.

First off, I'm just a recreational shooter, NOT ,gov or .mil, plain and simple.

I once had a chinese copy of the old Colt 4X AR-15 scope.  It had a really solid locking mount that never loosened, (but check ALL body screws).  Had a see-thru mount so I could still use iron-sights.  Worked very well.

Here's some idea's
http://www.cdnninvestments.com/ar4xbdcscwha.html   MADE IN JAPAN! (so it says), $99, ALL-IN-ONE 4x30 Illuninated, and has SEE-thru mount.

and others...
http://www.cdnninvestments.com/ar6xt1acrein.html  $59 6x, ALL-IN-ONE, some like it, I looked at one at a gunshow and it was slightly canted. made by slave-labour in china
http://capecod.craigslist.org/spo/539915567.html  -----all-in-one $50  NOT Illuminated, USED, made by slave-labour in china.

BTW,  My first reaction was to say that if you had a removable handle and had access to Aimpoints, then I would look for a used Aimpoint 3X magnifier, or even, dare I say it....  a china-made airsoft copy.  As the real Aimpoint holds your rifle zero, regardless of the magnifier behind it, it won't effect your zero even if the magnifier is very used when you get it.  Before I got a good mount I stuck mine on top of a Yankee Hill 1/2" riser ($20) in a set of cheap 30mm Millet rings ($30).  Works well behind M2/M3 in a Larue mount.

I know you wanted to keep it under $100 but the leatherwood company still makes ART scopes in the $240 range..they make one for 5.56 as well as .308.

Forgive me for asking, but shouldn't optics be an ISSUED item, i.e. paid for by americans, not the soldier?

Forgive me if this is out of line or anything like that...I know nothing of the logistics of obtaining gear while in the service or Iraq for that matter. I'm guessing that the normal chains of procurement don't allow for an ACOG or similar. Since your life and the life of your brothers will depend on this optic...I'd make a plea on the homefront to family, friends and neighbors to take up a collection and buy you an ACOG you can mount on your A2. I don't know your situation but I imagine they would hook you up since you're putting foot to ass for them.

On that kind of a budget Cabelas has a Baraska SKS 3-9 X 42 IR scope for $90.00 but you also need a carry handle mount.

Thanks for your suggestions, replies and kind words.....and to those who offered to kick in some $$....with all do respect...THANKS, but that IS NOT necessary.  I am not in a financial hardship type situation that would warrant such a nice gesture from you guys. There are others out there in a make or break situation who would really need that.

By the way, based on a PM I got...I am no longer in the Marine Corps.  My handle is "older"....I am AD Army now....been that way for almost 3 yrs now!!

What really get's me is these friggin fobbits who never leave the wire....running around here with tricked out M4's....awesome optics, IR Lasers, the whole 9....and they're "finance" or "AG" or something.  Now, I respect the fact that they handle our pay, etc but geezus.  Apparently, prioritizing who gets what is not on the Army agenda.

I will check these links out and see what fits me best....THANKS AGAIN!!

Been where you are, perfoming same ops and out of the items mentioned the cdnnsports website has some good choices, also Cabelas. Take into consideration that these units will most like deteriorate quicker than the expensive units and require constant tuning. I could really put more research into this if ou want and we can figure something out that will fit your needs and your budget. Have you considered a magnifier for the red dot? Also if you are thinking of engaging at distance you will want a scope thats also set-up for bullet drop compensation. Best to you, sorry to hear about you leaving the corp and joining the army Semper Fi

Check out Mueller Spoet dot. Better yet check out the Turkey scope. 2x7 illuminated 1mil dot. I've got 2 Mueller scopes and both have performed well on my AR's. I'm sure you could get Military pricing. If not let me know. I'll see what I can do.

Speaking as someone who has served in conflict in the Middle East, I will tell you that your life is going to depend on this optic.  Don't buy cheap!  A lot of dealers will offer MIL discounts.  There is no way I would have bet my life on a cheap scope.  Buy a Trijicon ACOG and stay safe brother.

Well I'm not exactly in your boat my whole unit was beefed up with money, we all have ACOGS, peq 2s, surefire and all the high speed stuff you mentioned but I definitely see where your coming from with the PID issue, which is very important in extreme urban areas. I also know what your talking about with fobbits rolling around the FOB with ACOGS, our whole entire brigade, suppport personal and all have ACOGS even people that's weapon has never been on FIRE; i suppose that's the crazy way the Army works. I do know though I would not use any cheapo optic over here, our ACOGS have held up the entire tour, not 1 has broken and mine has maintaned a decent zero for extended periods through and through. I'm not sure what unit you are with but I know our chain of command will not let us put any other optic on our weapons than what we are issued. Guys in my plt. had EOTechs they wanted to throw on and were denied, just because we were not issued them. IMO I would just bite the bullet in your case and buy an ACOG, you cannot go wrong with it.

Thanks for serving and SEMPER FI.
midwayusa.com has one that might work for you. I dont know this brand very well but they have a Leapers TS Platform 3-9x with a red/green lighted reticle for $70.  It attaches to the carry handle as well. Might be worth a try. They also have a non lighted Baraska but I wouldnt patrol with it. See what you think about the leapers. It's the only one I found with the magnification you mentioned. Most are 1.5x up to 4x.

stay away from Leapers or other low brand scopes. look in to the midrange bushnells, leupolds, burris, weaver, but MUELLER is probably getting the best bang for your buck even if they are over $100. Ask if they have a mil discount

"Procure" a fobbit's ACOG....that's the cheapest way to go, and it get's you a good optic. What's he need it for anyway.

HEHEHEHEHEE...I think M4B has the right idea. I hate to know the crap most businesses deal with (shitty finance distribution) our boys are dealing with over there. I work at Verizon and it kind of reminds me when they started rolling out DSL. All the internet boys had dual flat panel displays and all the latest and greatest PCs while we were running around stealing mice and keyboards to keep our PCs running. I know its nothing remotely like what you face...but my monitor did catch on fire once! Just trying to keep it light. I know your time online is probably limited but make sure you let us know what you eventually go with. I really hope the folks back home can come together and get you an optic that would serve you as well as you serve those on the homefront.

Here's one to add to your dream list...

www.swfa.com/p-9180-elcan-1x4x-specterdr-optical-sight.aspx

Illuminated, BDC, 1X for up close and personal jobs, and 4X for the long and dirty work.

This link may help also. I've donated money to them and they seem like a standup group. They pretty much came into existance buying optics for the military.

scope

This is a decent scope for your price. I have one. Take it from me, that this will work. Ill add a pic of my set up in a min. Mine isnt mounted on the A2 tho, but its the same scope. Mine also has a bullit drop comp.

ETA- The only real problem with this scope is the cheap ass flip up lense covers. You will notice that my front flip cover was replaced with a good buttler creek flip up lense cover. So far the rear flip cover hasnt broken off. The only other thing is that when zoomed all the way to 9x the sight picture will blur just a bit. Mine works best between 3x and 7x. I mostly keep mine at 3x tho.

The cross hairs are nice and the glass is ok, but works........it aint no Leupie tho. It has held zero even after being removed and remounted to the rail. The illumination is good but the batteries it takes are CR2032s which are probably not that common in Iraq, so you should order a bunch if you plan to use it a lot at night. Id say each battery will last about 1 hour constantly running.

I hope this help you
