I am also a newbie  to the AR platform. I have lots of guns, mostly for hunting, but I also have a M1A Socom 16.
I have the chance to pick up a slightly used,(less than 500 rounds) Colt HBAR Target Match post ban rifle from a local firefighter for $800. It looks mint, what should I be cautious of? It has no flash supressor, is this a problem? Also this barrel is a 1/9 twist, is there going to be a problem with bullits over 60gr? Is this rifle a problem to accessorize because of some offsize "pins" I'm not sure if this is the right rifle for the money, any help out there?
I want an accurate rifle, so I'll be selling my Mini-14 soon to make room in the gunsafe.

Bob, first off welcome to the site.

The Match Target is an OK rifle, but it is a ban-era rifle without what many consider fundamental features of the traditional AR15. These are not necessary but more a matter of principal.

These include fash hider, bayonet lug, and collapsible stocks.

My recommendation would be to look for another current model, which you can get for nearly that same price.

Options include:

Colt LE 6920 : Best there is in this segment (used for $1,000 or less and new for about $1,275)
LMT - M4 version for about $1,000
Bushmaster M4 A3 version for about $900
RockRiverArms- their mid-length 16" bbl. model is very nice at less than $900

Look around this site and see what guys are using and saying, and you will pick up a ton of helpful information.

$800 or $1000 is not an insignificant amount to spend, and the rifle you select will be your go-to rifle, so spend the time reading looking listening to those here who have been in your same situation.

Keep us posted.

the lack of flash suppressor isn't a issue...you can have the barrel threaded for about 50$ from ADCO.

the 1/9 twist can handle bullet up to 69gr...check ammo-oracle.com for more info.

as you already know Colt need a trigger group with large pind (0.170''): Rock River Arms and other manufacturers offer Match Triggers that will fit a Colt lower receiver with no problems.
