| My Dad's interested in getting his first AR but doesn't know much about them. He wants to keep it simple and reliable (maybe an A2) but wants it to be accurate at moderate ranges (maybe do some varmit hunting with it). What make/model do you all recommend? |

20" government profile. Buy the upper online from CMMG, and build/buy a lower locally. A basic lower with A2 stock, standard trigger shouldn't cost much more than $250 (and can dip into the $200 range if you shop around or order various parts online). Combined with a complete upper for ~$500 you now have a complete rifle. You want to start with a rifle length, as they just generally have less issues. |
I basically agree with this. except Armalite has a nice profile on thiers, it is the same thickness under the handguard as in front, rather then skinny under the handguard. Armalite had some great sales over the holidays and guys bought uppers that they did not need and these are now showing up on the equipment exchange. Most guys are making a profit on them but most are still a good deal. YOu cna buy the upper half on the Equipment exchange then buy a lower half from a local dealer since that is the part that requires an FFL. I would suggest the Armalite (Eagle Arms) lower also, as it now comes with a nice 2 stage trigger at a good price. |
