I have a Match Target HBAR that lives in my safe and doesn't come out much.  I have been itching to build a DMR style rife, and I was considering sending the barrel off to get threaded and possibly turned down or fluted under the handguards.  I think this should come in around the $150 mark.  Being a ban rifle, I don't think there is any special value to this rifle or leaving it the way it is.  I basically don't want to do anything stupid, though.  If it will be more cost effective to sell this and start over, I am all for it.  There isn't anything I'm missing, is there?  Should I go ahead and send it in?

Sell it and get what you really want.

I had a Post-ban Bushmaster barrel turned down and threaded at the muzzle and refinished for around a 100.00bucks.

I also have a post ban Colt Match H-Bar lower I built into an M-4 type carbine.

I don't think you will hurt value of a post-ban colt by doing a facelift.  Since the Ban ended in 94 with the exception of a handful of places you can turn it into whatever you want.E.G. pre-ban configuration.

As in the entire rifle?  Or the barrel?  I am just worried about it not being cost effective to sell a low round count used rifle to turn around and buy a similar rifle of different manufacturer.  Will the Colt fetch that much that I can turn around and buy say, a RRA the way I want it?

I'd say that you are best off building a new rifle.

I had a ban HBar turned to gummint profile and a flash hider added.  Adco did great work, but I had a hard time getting my money out of the rifle when I sold it.  Lack of a chrome bore didn't help, but it did feel much better than the origianl config.
Prolly better to sell.  Have you found an upper to your liking?  How much is it?

If I put money into it, I won't get rid of it.  That's why I am debating whether to start workign on this one or sell it and buy something else.  I don't have my eye on anything in particular, but I was wondering if it would fetch enough to buy something else I liked better.  I don't really know if being a Colt affects its value or if it is worth more to somebody else than it is to me.  Otherwise, I might just buy a new SS barrel and build a DMR type rifle off of it.

You want a DMR, but Colt trigger pins don't lend themselves to that type of thing.

Aren't there several triggers made for the Colts?

The only non-stock trigger I would ever put in a gun is the Geissele SSA, which won't be available with Colt pins for some time.

It will be a while before I could save up the $300 for one after I buy all the other components anyway.  But that is definately another nod towards selling it.

The non adjustable SSA model will only be 145.

Do people pay more for a rifle because it is a Colt?  If there are two similar rifles, and one is a Colt, will people pay a premium for it?  It is hard to judge the value of firearms.  I am having a hard time seeing how selling this rifle would be benefical to me.

Well, if it's a preban lower you could trade it to me for a couple of BN Stag lowers.

yes, because of the QC that is associated with Colt, it will fetch more.
The Colt LE models will have the same QC that your M4 or M16 does in the sandbox.
I payed $1200 for a Colt LE carbine because of the QC.
I have other AR15 variants that I paid half that for, but the Colt tends to hold it's value if well cared for. The others Generally depreciate when used.

Most clones will not have M197 Proof round fired and MPI'd Barrels and bolts, shot-peened bolts, TDP specification steel, high heat composites, double heat shields, many clones will not have the correct height front sight base, and many other little such QC and materials and specification issues. If they do, they will generally cost as much as a Colt, or more. Some, like Les Baer and Wilson, may cost much more, but generally not be any better from a QC or functional standpoint, or resale value, though they may cosmetically prettier.

There is a lot more to these than meets the eye.

DR, thanks for the answer.  I knew there are Colt fanatics, just like any other brand, but I didn't know the reasoning behind it.  Is there a good source to find out values of rifles?  I've tried watching gunbroker, but it doesn't seem very consistent.

Honestly, the EE here is pretty good for prices.
