I am considering one of these rifles.  Is there any advantage to the 24" barrel on the Varminter?  The varminter has a 1:9 twist and the 20" predator a 1:8 twist.  Thank you for the help.

Can you buy just the Predator barrel? Or do you have to buy the DCM barrel and add the fluting?

If it were me, I would go with the 20" setup.  My 20" V-Match Bushmaster can outshoot my 24" Varmint.

What are you going to be using the rifle for?

I would be happy with both brands

Mostly target shooting.  I may get the opportunity to take it hunting at some future point in time.  I was thinking the extra 4" might be better for longer ranges as the velocity is a little higher.  I will probably load bullets in the 50-69 grain range but lighter bullets may also be useful.  I am not sure I would have much use for real heavy bullets which apparently the faster twist rate of 1:8 is better for.

I think I have decided on the Varminter!  Thanks for the input!

My Varminter was one of my most accurate AR's ever period...But then the boating accident happened and you know the rest..

I bought a Varminter before the Predator was out.  I would rather have a Predator, the 1/8 twist is worth losing 4" to me.  The Predator is handier too.

From the Bushmaster website:

The 20" Bushmaster Barrel is fluted 4150 ChroMoly Vanadium Steel (non- chrome lined) with sharp 1 x 8” twist rifling for the heavier bullets typically used on bigger varmints and predators.

OK, but what profile is it, HBAR, Gov't, lightweight?

I've looked and can't find any answer on their website, and you can't tell from the pic.

ETA -The Varminter has a heavy barrel but nothing about the Predator barrel.

Designed around our DCM Competition Barrel, in a 24" Fluted, Extra
Heavy Profile – machined to SAAMI specification tolerances of 4150
ChromeMoly Vanadium steel. Full length fluting reduces weight and
increases barrel cooling. Barrel Is a full 1" diameter under the Forend,
and has an 11° Competition Crowned Muzzle.

They are both super heavy under the handguard and fluted.. Outside the handguard you can see it is skinnier.

Varminter is heavy and the barrel is 24" I have one and it is ok but carry it for a couple of hours in the field and you will begin to feel it. (note to self...get a sling) I suppose you could get the varminter and cut it down if you really needed something shorter and lighter.  Personally, I would go with an SPR upper from ADCO, and a lower of your choice.

That's what I thought, but I wasn't sure. You figure they would describe the barrel on the Predator just as well as they did the Varminter.

I have both of these also, but in my case my Varminter shoots tighter groups than my V-Match.

I believe the Vmatch is chrome lined and the Varminter is not.  The lack of chrome lining supposedly makes for a more accurate gun.  This is not a combat gun but a target gun so the chrome lining is not necessary.  The varminter also has a match chamber and they supposedly headspace them more accurately.
