I have seen a lot of pics of some BAD ACE rifles on here. Some of them have powered optics i.e. 3x, 4x, variable power scopes and flashlights. What is the point of having the light when your intentions with the scope are longer range shots. NOT KNOCKING THEM CAUSE THEY LOOK SWEET!!! I want a light on my carbine with standard handguards but dont know how to side mount one. Also would it be irrational to put a bipod on a 16" carbine?

People put accessories on thier rifles to enhance thier effectiveness in different situations.

Putting a light on a rifle that is primarily reserved for long range shooting isn't really necessary...but who's to say they wont ever need it. Esp. if it's thier only EBR.

I would only put a bipod on if you plan to do long range shooting with it. Barrel length is irrelavent.

Here's a way to mount a light on the side. Here

Also, if you have tactical handguards, you can mount one anywhere.

My Pentagonlight X3 can easily throw its beam 75 yards.  My ACOG TA31 will allow me to take a headshot at the same distance once I've identified the target with the light.

Some Surefire weapon mounted lights I have used can get you to 100m w/ an ACOG, Nightforce IL, Swarovski IL, and probably many other I don't have night experience with.  Never tried w/ my Eotechs or Aimpoints.

Really not necessary for most.  If you ever clear buildings as LE (IMHO) a weapon mounted light of some sort is a must.  Even a Streamlight TRL will work ok for close up LE work.  I have a TRL on my HD rail.  Lightweight and (I think) 75 or 125 lumens.  Perfect for that situation.  Work rifle is a LMT 14.5" MRP w/ Surefire foregrip light.  Lots of juice on that bad boy.  2 - expensive though.

a FSB mount (preferably a quality one like from MI or even a cheapo from promag--do NOT get the crappy one from SOG), a GGGZ bolt on small bolt on rail, or a short (2" or so) picanny rail mounted on the top or bottom will work fine (MI again)

using a VLTOR side light mount might also work well too, esp for if you want to offset your light if its on the top/bottom rail
