I'd appreciate any help for those familiar with RRA NM AR(s).  I can't get my hands on one to see it.

Two questions:

- RRA lists the weight at 9.7 lbs...The same as my 24" RRA Varmint.  Why is it so heavy?  The barrel is shorter and not a bull.  Is the buttstock or handguard weighted?

- Iron sights:  I'd like fine sights...but I'm to the age where I need reading glasses.  1/2x1/2 .040(s) to 1/4x1/4 .030(s).  Any insights into what might be best for highpower shooting with eyes that used to be 20/10 (double normal vision) but now require reading glasses?

The barrel is heavy under the handguards and there is also a free float tube under the handguards.

As to which MOAS adjustment for the rear sights, most people will tell you that either will work.  I personally prefer 1/4 minute sights.  As for aperture size, get both and see which one you like better, they swap out easy.  Most people use .040.  The .030 just doesn't let in as much light, which can be a problem on overcast days.

The tube is stupid heavy as to the sights 1/4 for me but that is a more personal choice generally.

I just sold a RRA NM upper, as I was keeping it as a spare in case my primary service rifle bilged for some reason.  Nicely built upper with a Wilson barrel.  From sandbags at 100 yards with Black Hills 77 grain stuff, it would routinely put 5 rounds in a 3/4" circle. Yes, the barrel profile, along with the FF tube, adds a lot of weight (I then add another 1.5 pounds under the handguards and 3 lbs. in the stock to steady the thing).

I use 1/4" sights and have a Bob Jones diopter in the rear aperture of my NM rifle.  The sight hood comes with 5 interchangeable apertures, which are changed with the supplied wrench.  I keep one of the smaller apertures in place, unless it's really a dark day.

I'm far-sighted and cannot see the front sight clearly, even with my glasses on.  With the addition of the diopter, I'm good to go.  The bull is fuzzy (at all distances), but the front post is razor sharp (theoretically , like it should be).

If you go to the CMP website, you can E-mail questions to the AMU guys who live and breathe high-power.  You can also look at the national match forums and ask questions there.

I would guess most would steer you towards 1/4 x 1/4 sights (or at least 1/4 for wind and 1/2 for elevation as a minimum).

Happy shopping!
