Get a Rock River Arms in the .223 Wylde chamber and it makes the .223/5.56 issue moot. You also get fantastic quality and there is absolutely no bias on my part!  I ahev a RRA Entry Tactical and I have a RRA 20" factory A4 upper with a FF tube, bipod, and scope.  I am looking at adding a 6.8 upper as well for deer hunting (I'd like a 6.5 Grendel but . . . ).  A buddy of mine has a Bushmaster and it runs fine for him as long as he keeps it well lubed.  I don't have any experience with the other brands so no opinion on them that would be fair.

Cheers

I didn't look up each of those models, but we will start with what is your use for the firearm?
The ABCs are widely regarded as the top shelf. the others are good firearms for your average shooter. All can be upgraded later.

.223/5.56 are very similar and one way interchangable. the 5.56 is typically a bit hotter, bit higher pressure, and can have a bit different bullet profile. a 5.56 chambered rifle will have more throat space than a .223 chambered rifle. This allows the bullet to move a bit more before contacting the rifling. a 5.56 in a .223 chambered rifle will produce higher chamber pressures than the .223 is rated at.

By ABC's I assume that you are referring to the Bushmaster brand. If this is not the case, which brand are you referring too? As far as useage goes, I would use it as a combination informal target, carry around in the truck, predator control (Coyote) weapon. I want a rifle that will be 100% dependable with flawless functions and one that will absorb a certain amount of abuse in every day tasks.

Thanks,
James

I have looked at the Rock River site but failed to locate one with the 16 inch M4 barrel, M2 Birdcage, collapsable stock and removeable carry handle. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
James

ABCs are Armalite, Bushmaster, Colt. (Rock River is getting thrown into this class more lately)

I would say for shooting volumes less than a few thousand per year, any rifle will serve you fine for years with proper care.

I second the motion regarding Rock River Arms.  Their quality is outstanding and prices are reasonable.  Look on the "industry" section of this website for a business called"Legal Transfers".  Old Pete will get you fixed up, and at a bargain price.

Another bargain is a Bushmaster ORC (optics ready carbine).  It's a nice little rifle that you can get for around $700 or so.

When you decide on what rifle to get, please consider adding a RRA 2-stage match trigger to it.  Most stock ARs have a shitty trigger and that is a serious impediment to accuracy.  A $75 investment in this trigger is the best money you'll ever spend on an AR modification.  If you order your rifle from Legal Transfers they'll have it put in for you.

I revisited the Rock River site and remembered what I didn't like was the looks of. It was the configuration of the removeable carry handle. I was expecting to see the conventional type. This is not to say that their's isn't a good one. I guess that I have a certain configuration stuck in my head. What distributors carry the Rock River brand? Ellett Brothers, RSR, Davidsons, Jerry's Sport Center don't that I can tell. R Guns has them but at a price.

THANK YOU!! for this link. I answers most of my questions. The letters FSB, is that "front sight base" or something else? Also, I am curious if the S&W M15 has been closely looked at for the specs, etc.

Thanks again for the link,
James
