Carbines are the big thing now. A lot of gun stores around here don't even stock full-sized AR's anymore.

I prefer 20"bbl AR's because that's the type I learned to shoot and the carbines just don't feel 'right' to me.

They're easier to handle in tight quarters, lighter, quicker to move.

They don't get the velocity of a longer barrel and sight radius is shorter.

I have two 20" ARs and a pair of 16-inchers too. The carbines are neat and great to use in close quarters, but if I had to choose just one, the 20" AR length gets the most punch out of those 5.56mm rounds and the longer sight radius leads to more accurate shots.

these sound the same to me

20" C7 upper

11.5" home built upper

both with the same can mounted.

A real answer, a carbine will be somewhat louder to the shooter, but from the observer's perspective the difference is not as noticeable, unless you're talking a short, short barrel.

Go to gun store and fondle the different lengths. The stocks on A2's are a bit long for many but you can get an A1 stock wich is just about right. I used an A1 in the military and don't like the carbines or the A2's. I built two 20"ers with A4 uppers and A1 stocks. I have one Hbar and one gov profile wich is quite a bit lighter and much better handling than the Hbar. I do plan on getting a 16" gov profile upper and will probably use an A1 stock on it as well, like the poster above the short barreled carbines with ajustable stocks just don't feel right for me. 5.56 is still the caliber of choice for reasons of avialibility and price but recent price increases have closed the gap between it and other calibers that may be better suited for hunting or long range shooting.

shorter ARs (i.e: carbines) have thier advantages and disadvantages; for a lot of folks' uses, they are suited well enough to do the job thats required of em--each MMV

they are louder, mostly due to perception, due to the shorter bbl length and its closer(ness) to the operator
