Use your fingers to tighten the Vortex. I did not use a washer on either of mine. It will tighten as you shoot it.

finger tight then shoot it. No washer.

huh, guys, I have the muzzle brake, not the Vortex... there must be a minimum torque to apply to it as the brake must not self tighten as the Vortex when we fire the rifle...
