This is my first post here.  I have been a member awhile but have never posted until today.

I purchased my first AR today.  I got a High Standard HSA-15 HSTX6551 for 8-tax.  I have searched the board for information on High Standard but can't find anything here.  It is a 16" carbine, RH 9" turn, adjustable sights on the rear, collapsable stock, and several other things that appear to be to be common.

I have several questions, first has anyone had any experience with High Standard?  Next, it is stamped 5.56 on the lower which I am assuming is what it was intended to fire but when I opened the box there was a small brown envelope that had a small .223 round (fired) in it, will it be safe to fire both 5.56 and .223?

Also there is a "key hole" marking on the right side of the upper.  What does that mean?

I guess that is all for now.

Thanks
Al

Keyhole is a common marking on many quality uppers including Bushmaster. Most AR major parts are manufactured by 3 different companies. 1 that comes to mind is CMT.

As far as 223. vs 5.56 they are interchangable for the most part. If it says 223 on the side of your rifle 5.56 may fit a little too snug and you may have the ejection issues. If it is the other way around then 223 is what most people use as it is the most common in the civilian marketplace.

I have not heard of that manufacturer to date but I know there are a number of small companies that I know of that not many do. It sounds like a quality setup, post some pics.

Using military ammo in a .223 chamber can lead to over pressure issues...

Ironically, you say you have been lurking here for a while, then go out and buy an AR that you have never seen discussed on the site.  I find that surprising.

Additionally, the markings on the lower fulfill a legal requirement, but have no technical connection with the caliber the rifle actually fires.  There are plenty rifles marked .223 that fire 9mm.

Check for markings on the barrel.  It should say .223 or 5.56.  Hell, that still may not be correct since some manufacturers mix them up too.

I am not too knowledgeable on determining which chamber the gun actually has, but I would be wary of shooting military ammo out of it unless you can confirm the chamber.

When I said "lerking", what I ment to say was that I have been a member for several years.  I signed up awhile back when I was looking for SKS info.

Speaking for myself, the constant bashing of (insert whichever AR brand name here) led me to give up on which AR is the best/worst because after reading here for a long time it reminded me of Ford vs Chevy vs Dodge arguments; futile ego wars based upon "what-I-have-is-the-best-and-what-you-have-is-junk".

So I based my purchase upon the only two AR's I had experience with - Dad's old colt and my brother's Bushmaster. I liked both of them about the same. The gun store didn't have any Colts for under $1500 and with a removable carry handle so I bought the Bushmaster and I've been happy with it.

Perhaps a lot of the newbies are turned off by this too and just give up on trying to figure out which AR they should buy and just pick one at random.
