I have been lurking on this great site for a while now. I am new to AR's (but not new to firearms) and I want to build my first one. My first question on this journey is about lowers. As long as it is mil-spec, is one lower (manufacturer) better than another? If so what should I look for in a lower?

In my opinion, for most of the reputable manufacturers, a forged lower is a forged lower is a forged lower is a forged lower.  That goes for CMMG, Bushmaster, RRA, Stag, DPMS, and many more.

Then there are billet lowers, which are a whole other area.  Some they they are much better so disagree.  I have never used a billet lower but I do think they LOOK nicer.

Pick the lower you like the rollmark for the best and buy it from one of the Industry Partners here on the board and you will be happy with it's performance.

basically, "yes" as long as your lower is to spec and fits the parts, it doesnt really make a diff (ex for the logo, and fit and finish); forged spec Al is the best overall for the price

on the subject of forged lowers.

Are they hammer forged or roll forged?
Are they Hot forged or cold forged?
Does it really matter?

I only ask because the different processes does effect the final material structure.
