In short, most any upper of your choice from the reputable manufacturers should serve you well. It's training, experience, good mags, BCG & ammo that should be of the most concern.

If I were you, I would order a Stag Arms upper from Pete in New Hampshire and be done with it.  Check out his ads in the EE or his website here.

Welcome to the site, enjoy!

+1 to all the above. Get a good upper and you are fixed for good.

as for training: I HIGHLY suggest you get some professional training. I recently went through the Front Sight basic rifle course, in Nevada. I was humbled! I have been shooting since I was about 6 years old, and thought I knew what it was about.

Their training can be taken by anyone, with any skill level... from rank beginners to people who've had military training... and they will benefit from it. Their training leans toward combat/police shooting, versus target or hunting.

Look around for ways to beat the high cost of their tuition ($2000 or so). There are certificates available for +- $150 that will bypass the tuition. They are available on eBay for example.

For your upper you don't give a sense of price, but here is what I reccommend.  Any of several good brands, but get a mid length gas system with a rail system.

My favored brands : Sabre Defense, LMT, Armalite,

there are premium brands that you ca nget if you want, the one folks like to talk about currently is Noveske.

base level brands are: Rock River, Stag, CMMG, Bushmaster - these are fine too.

My favorite dealer is Nate at NVBGear.com a board sponsor.  he has good prices but more importantly takes time to talk to you on the phone without rushing you or pushing things onto you.  I bought an LMT from him and am going to have him do a custom upper soon.
