Can anyone give me a ballpark estimate for the max eff. range of an AR with both 16" and 20" barrell.  Trying to figure out which to go with.  Mostly for target with some light critter work when I go upstate.

Thanks.

Taking the shooter out of the equation and assuming your rifle can shoot 1 MOA...
at 300 to 400 Yards you will have an approximate 4" group.

So the next question is what is the size of the critter/s?

You will kill critters at 1000+ yards (if you can hit 'em). 300 to 600 yards is very nice working range for the AR though.
Longer barrel means faster bullet so environment has less time to work on it's travel, but accuracy is the same for ideal conditions. The longer barrel will give you a bit better balistics at longer ranges as well.

prairie dogs, wabbits, occasionally a coyote will "F" with the cows and need some attention.

Can't give a distance but, personally I would get the 16" and get an excellent scope/optic and use quality ammo.
