Alright fella's, as some of you may know, I had owned a colt match target competition hbar2, but sold it after trying various additions like a collapsable stock, aimpoint, cheap eotech knock off, vfg, surefire light etc. That bitch was heavy and my buddys bushmaster was very lite weight, i didnt like that. I kept my craptastic romanian ak, for two reasons, one being that its resale value wasn't as impressive as the colt, the other being that i was more proficient with it and like the near non-existant maintenence it requires. I was born and raised to use traditional sights, like whats on the ak or a 30-30 etc, and so anything with a circular rear apeture just didnt do it for me. With the eotech knockoff (panorama i believe) i could get hits on clays with it at 100 with a rest, but like at 25-50 it seemed to shoot high or low (i forget which). I do not regret selling the rifle, i simply did not like it aside from how sexy it looked, for me it lacked function, whereas i couldn't bear to lose my ak less i had another lined up or a good sks i could bubba out to look like an ak. But its hard to deny the urge to own an ar, they look so sexy, but I could never use one as well as my ak for bustin those clays at 100 yds, mostly because of the different sites i think. I retain over 2000 or so rounds of 223 after selling the colt hbar, and was seriously contemplating getting like a remington 700 tacticool bolt action to eat those rounds with. But i am also considering getting a new ar, even though historically i cant shoot one well, and so im torn. I'll have about 2 grand saved up to blow in early january, barring unforseen bullshit, and will for sure be buying at least one new gun, I'm just not sure which. My questions are as follows: 1) is there some trick to using a circular rear site that i don't understand? And why did my ar seem to shoot low (or high, i forget which) at close ranges but seemed to shoot straight at 100 yards? 2) If i was to buy a new ar, what brand? m4 style or m16'ish? Remember that i'm fine with my romak, and bust clays at 100 with it despite crappy trigger as easy as pie, should my hypothetical ar do the same or something different? 3) would i be better off with the bolt action? I have a colt sportsmen 300 mag and a 22 mag for precision shooting..... 4) For me the ar appeal is the look, they look so bad ass and smooth, but i could never shoot one worth a shit, are there rear sites available to slap onto a flattop that are traditional trenches instead of circles you look through? 5) Should i instead be looking into some semi-auto mp5 knockoff (another sexy gun) and sbr it when i get it? Thanks in advance. I was settled onto the bolt action, but the pic threads here kinda make me want an ar for the asthetic quality even if i cant shoot one for shit. |
This happens with all rifles/handguns/weapons that fire projectiles. They are only 'on' at the distance they are zeroed at. Rifles like the AR & AK really show this effect as their sights sits 2.5" over the bore. But you'll see it with granddad's .30-30 as well - it may be right on at 100y, but it WILL be low at 200 (and 300 and ....)
Colt 6920. (16" M4 style)
Depends on what kind of shooting you want to engage in.
Aperture sights are FAR more accurate. Learn how to use them and you won't go back to anything else.
Get both if you got the $$ |
Any new weapon system will require practice. Take it slow, practice good safety skills and fundimentals and the AR will become second nature to you and will provide a much more accurate shot than the AK will. TalonArms.com |

Thanks for the input guys. I like my buddys bushmaster for looks and weight, but its plain jain m4 style, nuthin but a sling (which i kinda like). I had got all excited and attached everything but the kitchen sink to the colt before giving up on it. I've been shootin since i was 5, im 28 now, so i understand bullet drop but it seemed to me the ar i had was shooting low at the 50 yard line which made me scratch my head, if anything i'd have figured it would shoot high if it was dead on at 100 (with a rest). I could never shoot that hbar with the same level of confidence and accuracy as i do the ak, and usually beat my buddy shooting it against his bushmaster but he is more of bolt gun+scope kinda guy anyway. (shooting standing, no support but a sling at staked clays on the berm at 100 yds) I'm checkin out that link you gave, I'm not seeing the site you describe. As for which ar, I found where you can get m16 style olympic arms for about 5 or 6, and colt 6290's for about 13 or 14. I'll likely have the cash saved to get the 6290, but I really dont want to have the same trip i did with the previous colt, too heavy compared to the bushy and a site i suck with. I think it'd help me if the circle had a wire crosshair in it, i have difficulty getting tip of front site post in dead center of the circle. Whereas with traditional sites on the ak the only variation for me is really vertical, it sort of auto-aligns left and right for me with its |_'_| shape, give it more bead for a longer shot or sliding the rear sight up a notch. To be honest I dont need a new ar or bolt gun for that matter, but i dont wanna give/sell the ammo away and cant stand to have ammo for which i dont have a gun. The 300mag is exspensive to shoot all day, so i dont shoot it much. It used to be my dads, he claims "the stock is laid in glass" whatever that means but it doesnt seem to come apart beyond the bolt being removable. I had got the idea for a bolt gun from my bushy buddy, he used to have, briefly, a synthetic stock 223 bolt action with like a five round mag and a redfield (i think) 6-16 scope on it, and it was very asthetically pleasing and accurate too, I'd thought it would be something more affordale to shoot than the 300 mag but more satisfying than the 22 mag. Maybe its my eyes or a dysfunctional part of my brain but i have trouble with any weapon with a circle for a rear sight, it was the same story with the two min14's i used to own. ETA what is the opinion of those who know about the robinson xcr? |

Ok so locally, without ordering, I can get bushy, RRA, Stag, S&W, and olympic, shit i didnt even know S&W made ar's. I wanted a xcr, no go without ordering and waiting, something i've never done before, same with the colt 6290. So of those i can walk in, pay for, and walk out with, which would you recommend? If you say i should go with 6290 or xcr, whats the ordering process like, how much wait time etc? Atlantic arms has xcr's but they ship without sights it seems, i am interested in the arms # 40 mentioned above. Thanks. ETA A friend insists bushy, even over colt, so thats what i voted for. |
RRA offers some stainless 1:8 carbines www.rockriverarms.com/Catlist.cfm?Category=01 check out www.cmmginc.com |

according to the chart above, the S&W scores the highest among the available in-stock-at-the-fun-shop options, but the poll shows RRA as most popular so far.....is there something to RRA that the chart is not reflecting, something that explains the popularity? Dammit I still want xcr |
|
nah they're telling me they do not currently have the ability to order xcr's or they want to tag on too big a fee or that they don't do transfers for guns they dont normally stock.....gonna check with a couple pawnshops and see if they can do a transfer, wont really have the cash saved up until about 2nd or 3rd week of january though, if the wait time is too long or the price too high ill go with an in-stock option or just get the remington 700...assload of those floating around. Maybe in the future i can get an xcr but ill have around 2k saved up, thats rifle, mags+sling, some ammo and some furniture for my ak with some left over provided i dont pay more than 1-1.2k or so for the rifle.... According to that chart the S&W is the next step down from colt, anyone have good or bad reviews of them? |
They have been selling them longer - and people will tell you to buy what they bought to reaffirm their purchase decision. Of the ones in the poll I'd take either the Stag or the S&W over the RRA. |
'Bullet drop' involves the height of the sight plane over the bore. With 2.6" at 50y the bullet is still rising to get to the sight plane of your 'zeroed at 100y' rifle. Hence it will appear to be low. |
RRA has been making them longer and they are cheaper, and everyone always pushes the rifle they own. The S&W is the better rifle. That said, depending on your use, paying the extra money may or may not be worth it. If you are going to use it to earn your living, or just want better quality, then definitely S&W, Colt, LMT. |
