I have always been a fan of the A1 sights, used them in the Marines. I bought an A2 upper early this year and just traded it for a Sig P229.
Now the next Ar I want to build is a flat top 16".
I have been looking at going with a gas block instead of a front sight base.
I have no knowledge about gas blocks...so here are a couple questions:
1) can a gas block be installed on a rifle that has a FSB?
2) can I do it myself?

1: yes

2: sure can, just got to have the right tools

basically, you remove the 2 FSB pins (some are tapered and there are some tricks to help remove the tougher ones); then, get whatever brand gas block you want, slip it on, align the gas port holes, and tighten the set screws (of course, remove, and reinstall the gas tube and pin)

If this is going to be your go to rifle then send it to adco and have them pin it for you, doesn't cost much.  If its just a plinker, set screws will be fine.

Thanks guys.

I may order the complete upper with gas block installed.
But just in case I don't, I was wanting the info you provided, should I decide to get an upper with a FSB,should later on if I wanted to go gas block.

The more I look at the rifles with the gas blocks, the more I like tem, especially the Vltor low profile.

Are there any other blocks that you can suggest?

If you use the brownells orange block and their taper pin starter it makes getting the FSB off a piece of cake.

orange block

Order brownells taper pin starter (its just a starret 3/32 nail set punch), brownells part number 827-530-320

This website is great, step by step instructions:

I have found the above Brownell's orange block to not be a very good fit.  I can't remember what dimensions they are not sizing correctly, but there's considerable modification necessary to get proper support to the barrel.

My advice is to save $$ and just work up something yourself using scrap lumber.

Can I get a second on this?

Get ahold of Pete at Legal Transfers.  He is an ARFCOM dealer.

He is selling this COMPLETE upper for @ $440.00 shipped to your front door like pizza:

Speak with him about changing the FSB out for a GB.  Super nice guy on the phone.

The barrel has a 1-9" twist and is chrome-lined.

Here is his thread in the EE:

Best to you.
