Does anyone know of a web page that would help me research the serial number of a firearm? I'd like to know if it is possible to know if a gun has been reported stolen before I purchase it from someone I don't know. Thanks.

Carry it in person to your nearest law enforcement office. They will be glad to run the numbers for you. But be prepared to leave the gun behind if it comes back hot. They will NOT run the numbers with a phone call, because if it comes back as hot, they are required to take possession of the weapon at that point.

Your prospective seller could carry it himself and you could call said enforcement office for confirmation if this is not a FTF transaction. Having a law enforcement agent run the serial # through GCIC is the ONLY way to ascertain if it has been reported as stolen or not.

BUT......bear in mind.......just because it is not reported as stolen today, doesn't mean that the actual owner won't discover it missing next month, and report it then.....
