any distinct markings on a colt upper??

Depends on what one I imagine. My 6920 has a tiny M4 marking right where the gas tube enters the reciever. Some uppers have a "C" along with a forge marking. Some also have the Diemaco "D" marking. The Barrel also should be marked with a "C".

My Colt M16 upper has a square with a C in it right in front of the ejection port.

And if you'll look real close, under a strong light you should also find a triangle with a tinyP in it.
