I am fairly new to AR's so I was just wondering what kind of range and accuracy I can expect from a 20in stainless bull barrel on an AR.  I have heard people talking about hitting targets at 600yds.  This seems a little far for a 223 if you ask me.  What kind of accuracy can I expect and at what ranges.  I figured that if I could get a 3to4 inch group at 3oo yards that is probably about the best to expect from a 223.  Please share your experiences.

600 is not too far.  20 inch barrel, we qualify in the USMC at 500 yds easily.

Some competition shooter do well at the 1000 yard line with it.  With the right bullets.  Usually not magazine fed.  The round is capable.

a friend of mine did 189/200 points during a 300m match using his stock Colt MT6700 (HBAR 1/9 non-chrome lined, iron sights only).

with the right rifle configuration, loads and shooter, hitting target at 600yds  shouldn't be a problem

Ever hear of Camp Perry?  Paid attention to what is winning the NM recently (as in the past decade)?

I won a state long range championship match, service rifle class, with a 20" AR. It was fired at 1000 yards. 600 isn't considered long range in highpower comp....they call it mid-range. I was standing directly underneath a pine 2x4 that got hit by a .223 fired from 600 yards away and it was pretty spectacular.

Legion is right.  We do shoot it at 500yds, and that is with a stock A2.  With a good build, it would be very easy!  Let us know how it comes out!

Uh, find a local Hipower match and watch what they do with stock or floated ar's at 600 yds.

I've seen scores of 197 up at the 600 yd lines with ar's.
Not me of course.

Not to beat a dead horse but I just got through testing some handloads in my 16" M4gery and the 100 yard grouping was under an inch. This was the best of 4, 5 shot groups - four different loads.  The next closest one was just a tad over an inch.   This was with less than optimal brass too - I was testing for a good practice round using PMP brass which I have a lot of - and which is not the best out there... its a little soft, thicker than standard and not especially consistent in weight.  But, it gave very good results.  Anyway - the point is, this is a short barreled AR without  free floated handguards and with a standard fcg.

Keep in mind that the 600 and 1000 yard targets are big and visible - this is not like trying to place the bullet on a tan deer standing in tan grass at 600 yards.

Also, as mentioned already, the bullets are long and heavy 68-90 grains and the twist rates in the barrels are 1:7 or 1:8.

So, if you want to shoot long range then plan on that barrel being a fast twist and for best accuracy, handload.   Not that match ammo doesn't perform, it does - just that being able to customize the load to your rifle allows for the very best accuracy that it will deliver.

This is a 24", but the extra ~50fps don't matter much.

20" stainless precision barrel plus 77 Sierra Match King equals 1000 yard capability. Reading wind is another matter...
