hi..i have never owned an assaut rifle (i own a few pistols) but want to buy a basic ar15 for protection should the world go crazy..i am looking for some help on which model to buy as the first purchase..i was looking at some bushmaster m4 which seem to be what i want and can be found brand new for $900..do i need to shoot one before i buy?..is this a good beginner model?..i think it would be prudent to have a rifle with the current state of affairs in this world!!

Hopefully the world won't go crazy as holding an AR with many mags and ammo probably won't help much.  Bushmaster makes a nice rifle and you really can't go wrong with an M4 like carbine.  When you get your Bushmaster, you will still not own an assault rifle.  An assault rifle is a select fire weapon.  You can own these in most states but the going rate for an M-16 is about twelve to fifteen grand.  It really isn't necessary to shoot one before you buy it.  Let us know what you get and don't forget to post pictures.

Bushmaster is a very good rifle. I bought a bushmaster as my first rifle and it was a very good choice. It is a very good rifle but there are better ones out there: COLT and LMT to name a few. Also the Smith and Wesson M&P seems to be a popular choice these days. I dont think you have to shoot it before you buy, but it may help.

I would just read around here for a little bit and decide on what type of rifle you want before you buy. There are so many different types you want to make sure you know exactly what you want so you do not have to buy again.

I dont kow if you would be interested in a used rifle but CMMG has a great sale going on where you can buy a used Ar for $550. Its a mix of different makers but most of them are decent manufacturers. You can also pay an extra $20 and they will hand pick the best one.

thanks..what does "select fire" mean exactly...fully automatic?...i do think there is a chance things could get bad here and i figure having a rifle (as well as my handguns/shotgun) could help..more so i just think it would be a blast to have and shoot one...you know..an ounce of prevention (or a pound)...i have seen some brand new bushmasters on gunbroker.com for a good price..i have a local class3 ffl that i use so it should be easy to get

I think it is a close race but I would say people would rather have the s&w.

ETA: select fire means you can go from semi to burst/full auto.

i just read somewhere else that the s&w is made by stag and just rebranded...

IIRC they used to use stag but have recently started making them in house.

ETA stag is another good rifle, if you can get past the huge dear head on the lower.

No, civilian models only have semi.

i thought after the assault ban expired you could buy the ones branded military/government use only?...

There are alot of rifles that say that but that doesnt mean they have the burst. Many companies say that so they can charge more because people think they are getting something special.

In order to have burst and auto you have to send a bunch of paper work to the ATF and do some other shit. And like you said burst and auto weapons prices are through the roof.
