AR related stuff near the bottom of the page.

Seems like yet another article critising the m4s reliability.hinking.gif

It was a good read. I'm sure the HK updrade helped there old bullpup. I did see the evaluation of the M4 at the end of the artical.

I do believe we could have a better battle rifle than the M series. I kinda favor a 2-3 lug rotating bolt, Sig,Robinson.ect. Prefer a fixed ejector instead of spring/plunger, Piston gas system. As much as I hate saying it, it'd be a refined AK. And I'd be going with a indestructable AK type mag. The AR magazine is fairly weak. Of course all this would come at the cost of added weight and a loss in accuracy to a degree.

There will never be a perfect rifle. Though any new rifle design should be tested in hot sandy desert conditions as thats where will be in the foreseeable future.

I'll put my flame suit on now.

I must admit I agree with what you said. I'm not saying that the m16/4 is bad, I just think that they arent as good as some people on here make them out to be.

no it's not bad. I don't think theres a more accurate military rifle out there than the M series. There's just some designs I think are a little more capable. For a military rifle If you gave me a choice today as a replacement I'd lean towards a Sig 550 series.

I trained with the British Territorial Army (their version of the our National Guard) for a few weeks in 1996 and found the SA80 to be a reliable, accurate weapon, at least in the climate that we operated in Wales. The British troops we trained wtih seemed to have plenty of confidence in their weapons. I kind of actually prefered their weapons to the M-16's my unit carried.

I do think any good military has a sense of pride in there issue rifle, especially if it was developed in their country. Shoot nobody likes to say there rifles a turd. Just like transition periods between the M14 and M16, you don't here to many guys that carried the 14 have much praise for the M16. Probably more than a few 03 shooters did'nt want anything to do with the Garand when it was issued.

A funny thing is nobody likes changes in there life, weather it's at work, home,or play. It takes people awhile to come around to new things even if they are better.

With extensive combat experience with both the M16 and M4, I can say they definitely are as good as folks here make them out to be.

Phoebus. I'm not saying the M series is a bust, just saying there may be room for design improvement.

Alot of you fellas take time to maintain your equipment and know how it functions and what to look for when theres problems. Most of you enjoy shooting sports or would'nt be on this board.

Other folks put there weapon maintenance further down the list and run into problems, most of wich reach the media at some point and we read about them. Any weapon needs to be maintained, some operating types more so than others. I do believe there are better designs that would require less maintenance to keep running.

I've not seen bolt asemblies on FN scars or other new designs but have had the chance to examine a Sig 550 stripped down years back. I liked what I'd seen of it. Also a beefier magazine than the AR's would be a plus.
