After searching around and looking at various products I'm still a little confused on some of the varmint/precision rig parts and methods. Lets say I wanted to build (or buy) the upper for around 600, what would you suggest? What about cheaper, and what about a little more expensive? I'll admit I'm not wanting to spend a ton, so I'm not looking for something that will hit 1/2" groups at 300yrds or some other unobtanium setup. With a scope/mount I'd like to keep the total around 1200 (once again some substitutions would be appreciated). If it can be done. If not I'll spend more to get quality products. Following picture threads hasn't shown much in the way of what parts are used. Thanks for any help, Brandon |

What sort of performance are you looking for? You said you're not looking for 1/2 at 300, but where would you like to be? The most important pieces for a precision rig are the scope/mount, trigger, and barrel. If you're trying to build a precision rig on a smallish budget, here are a few suggestions: If this is a true, bench-type precision rig, the cheapest glass setup I would consider would be a Super Sniper scope ($300) in a LaRue mount, which would total you a bit under $500. No point in building a precision rifle and then putting crappy glass on it, and the SS scopes are some of the best for the money. Another great bang-for-your-buck part to use are the White Oak Armament SPR barrels. I have two 18" WOA SPR stainless barrels and I have found them extremely accurate, and IIRC they were about $265 apiece. You'll also want to free-float the barrel in some fashion. Then you need to consider the trigger. Lots of decent options here, from pretty cheap to expensive. At the low end of the "precision" range you have the RRA 2-stage triggers, which are pretty nice, especially since you can find them for $75 on the EE quite often. From there there are many options, and I'd suggest doing some searches for reviews. My precision rig at the moment has a Jewell trigger in it, because I got it for an incredible deal (used but functional for $60!). |

I would also be careful about what twist you want vs. what kind of bullet you want to shoot. A good free float tube would be wise as well, I dont think it matters which one, just as long as you like it. Also, get the best optics you can afford with the best mounts you can get. Alot of people consider 1/2 at 100 yards pretty damn good (which would yield a 1.5" or so group at 300), just to give you something to think about. |
that pretty much backs up some of what I've read. I've heard the SS were some nice pieces, but unsure of which model I need. I've read 3-9x would be fine, and others are saying to go 12 or even 16x. Any tips? in a 18" barrel, is the midlength gas system better, or is the SPRr a better choice with the rifle gas system? I'd think the midlength on anything under 20" would be best, yes? |
I have two SS scopes, a 16x and a 10x, both fixed mag (obviously). The 16x is a little more magnification than I'd like on a fixed scope for an AR (it's currently sitting on my Savage .308). I have the 10x on my SPR-ish build and I used it out to 500m or so, although I shoot more often at 100-200. If you're going to do most of your shooting 300+ you'd be good to go with the 16x (depending on how much field of view you like). If you're looking at more often being in the 100 range, 16x is probably a little more scope than is desirable. I don't have experience with the SS scopes beyond the 10x and 16x (I've been out of the loop for several months, last time I checked the availalbe SS mags were 10, 16, and 20x IIRC, but that may have changed). My SPR barrels are midlength gas, and they run very smoothly. I'm sure a rifle gas would work fine to, and I believe that you can buy the WOA SPR barrels with rifle-length gas systems out of the box. You might want to ask the forum about experiences with the two gas systems on that barrel. |

Wouldn't a variable scope be a better choice, or is that looking into a lot more $? And I'm sure there are "cheaper" setups out there, and more expensive. I really doubt I'll buy everything right now, just looking and searching to get some more information i haven't seen yet. I appreciate all responses though. |
