Ok, I'm going to be coming into some money in the future here, and I'm going to spoil my self. I looking into getting an AR15 type carbine, but I want the best.

Here are my specs:

1.) Barrel should match the range finding recticle in a trijicon acog ( i.e.TA01NSN)

2.) Collapsable or folding stock.

3.) chambered in 5.56, 6.8, or .308, and rifled to fire heavier rounds, but can fire cheap ammo in a pinch.

4.) I would prefer a piston driven design, or if it must be a DI gun, must have a lot of chrome to ease cleaning

5.) rail system must be included

6.) flip up sights, or fixed front

7.)Top quality, like colt, LMT, etc.

8.)Ease of repair, and common parts is a plus

9.) uses common or modified m16/ar10 magazines

Budget- for rifle around $2000, and around $1000 for optic.

If I can get my superiors to carry it on duty, that is my goal. It must be reliable, and dependable. I want a gun that is at ease hitting targets from squad car distance to 600m.

I am familiar with HK416 (won't happen), POF-USA, LWRC, Colt, LMT, Masada. but I want the opinion from those who have had actual experience on these weapons systems.

The reason I want to shy away from a DI gun is not because I've been brained washed into thinking the ar15 is deficient, but I want something different but reliable. I have owned several AR15s, and like them, but I hate the labor intensive cleaning process.

I appreciate any help you all can give me.

Well, I thought this would attract more attention, I guess I'll try something different.

I have no experience with piston AR's & don't have any interest in them. CMMG, Colt, LMT are all fine rifles that offer most, if not all, of the nicer features on a stock rifle. Unless you get a gun customized by a dealer or have it installed as a factory option by the factory when ordering, the only one I know of that you can get a rail system as a factory stock feature is the S&W M&PT. I may be wrong about that.

Where do you work where you may be making 600m shots with a carbine from your squad car? Not that it can't be done, but if you're a city slicker like me you're in a WOS in a multitude of ways (IMO) if you have to take a shot that long.

I live in the wide open midwest, where everyone has at least a 30/30 sitting by the door. I won't make 600m shots on a suspect for liability reasons, but I'd like the ability.

I guess I'm interested in LMTs Modular/quick change system if I have to go with a DI gun.

I believe LMT has or is about to come out with a piston conversion for the MRP. That could be a good option considering your specs.

Ah, I'm tracking. I'm in the Mid-West too, but work in a growing metropolis. You really can't go wrong with a Colt, CMMG or LMT for a duty rifle. They're not perfect, but they will prolly give you less prob's in the long term. Or just build your own with quality parts.

The LMT MRP upper is a nice piece of work. I only have two, but I am happy with them. I get them with the enhanced BCG's and bolts.

I like the ability to change barrels, not that I'm rolling in MRP barrels mind you.  Got a shorty, a 16, and am waiting on a 20 inch, kind of unusual I hear. Nice people to work with.

Don't blow the MGI off either, it is good too. It is easier to get barrels for it than the LMT (standard AR barrels, no locking cuts needed like the MRP). Just don't count on MGI getting you the barrels you want though. LONG turnaround times.  Nice people.

Both guns allow you to have mutiple barrels and mutiple calibers. Great flexibility, good bang for the buck.

I have a POF upper as well. Shoots well, reliable, wish it could swap barrels. Nice people to work with too.

i just read your post. i have 2 pof's and i think they would work well with your requirements.

if you got a 16" p9x upper. you would have the ability to reach out to 600m (wow that's pushing it) with plenty of rail space for your accesories. i recommend the p9x because you will then utilize a flip down front sight instead of the proprietary height fixed one they ship with the p4x handguards. that hooded front sight will interfere with your optics. i know, i have that problem.

i have the new vltor emod stock on mine, but any stock with a cheek rest (ala vltor, sopmod) works well.

the 16" barrel has a 1x8 twist which can stabilize 75grain TAP rounds which I would assume you might be interested in using.

cleaning is a breeze. as the barrel gets shorter, the piston gets dirtier. on my 16" upper...it takes about 10 minutes to maintain everything.

as for common parts. any piston system you go with will be hard to find spare parts. the nice thing about pof is that you can buy a spare parts package for safe keeping. then you do not need to wait around to get it fixed if it breaks.

a pof upper will fit within your overall budget of $2000 for a complete build. as for optics, i would recommend a red dot with a flip to the side magnifier. i have an acog on mine, but i also have the doctor optic on top. that will go over your $1000 budget.

an aimpoint with a 2moa dot (larue mount) and a 3 x magnifier with a flip to the side mount (larue) will meet your budget and performance requirements.

phew...i hope that this helps.

btw - make sure you upgrade your extractor spring and polish your feedramps and rough spots. i had some problems with my pof upper when i first got it. it runs perfectly now.

happy shopping.

oh...btw - if you are shopping for a lower, megas fit perfectly with their uppers. pof gen 1 lowers were made by mega i believe. pof's new lowers are really expensive. megas can be had for $135. www.coldwarshooters.com

You wouldn't be the first cop to take rounds while farther away then you can see the shooter.  At least when I'm shot at, the suspects are up nice and close, but thats the joy of being a city cop.

Have you thought about a variable power optic like the Accupoint, or other 1x4 power setups?
