What's the best way to remove the detent & spring to remove the pivot pin from the lower receiver with out missing up the finish of the lower receiver?

Yes, even the pros need help some time.

Couldn't find anything there.  Any other suggestions?

IIRC, there is a hole in the muzzle side of the pin which you can use a punch/allen wrench to push and hold the the detent in while removing the pivot pin completely.

don't shoot your eye out with the detent/spring.

If using a punch to push down on the detent and spring will there be room to pull it out?  I would think the punch would be in the way when you tried to pull the pin out or the detent would get caught by the lip of the pin.

Push the punch (I use a small finishing nail) through the hole in the pivot pin to compress the spring.  Then give the pivot pin a quarter turn, you'll probably need to back the punch out a little.  You'll be able to pull the pin without any trouble.  Just take it nice and slow so you don't put your eye out with the detent.
