Hey I am pretty new to AR15s and I need some advise. I'm looking to either buy or build a very good rifle for Rabbit hunting and maybe competition shooting later down the road. There are a few things I know I want but I would like your advise. I am planning on getting either a 20" or 24" barrel, hopefully fluted with maybe a 1/9 or 1/10 twist on it. My main question is which length is best for this use and which twist should I aim for. I am planning on shooting 55gr varmint bullets with a scope. Thanks a bunch.

24" for my varmint rig, 1 in 9 though you only need a 1 in 12 or 14 for 55 grainers.  If paper and distance are also in the plan, go 1 in 9, or 1 in 8.

Good luck and good shooting.

Take a look here for some hard evidense of capeabilities of various barrels. There is not a lot posted there yet, but what is there might interest you.

How accurate is???

FYI: Anvil Arms sells 20" and 24" non-flutted, straight fluted and helical (twisted) fluted.

Good luck with your pursuits!

20'' has been enough for me, seems to me 24'' is just too much length but if you dont mind having a very long rifle go for it, gives you a little extra velocity.

20" works for me.  If you want it to be pretty portable for hunting "wabbits", then 20" is about as heavy as you would want to go.
I have a pretty accurate 16" too.  You may be at a disadvantage in matches though with a 16". (Depends on the type of matches.  In action shooting matches a 16" would be a bit quicker handling.)
