I just recieved my first AR. It's a Stag Arms 608 lower, and has a 5.56 upper. The problem is that when I bring the charging handle back and press the bolt catch all the way in, it won't catch. My thinking is that the 608 lower's bolt catch was not made to have a 5.56 upper on the rifle. Would putting a regular ar15 bolt catch on there solve this problem. Any suggestions would help. Thanks

The Bolt catch should be the same for 5.56 or .223.   When pushing the bolt catch are you pushing at the bottom of the bolt catch?  Does it work if you put in an empty magazine?

I am pushing at the bottom of the pin. I can look down into the chamber and see that if it is pushed in all the way ther it still does not even contact the bolt. I've also tried it with a magazine in and it is the same thing.

Try an empty mag and still if it holds it open. If it does, I think it may be your technique not the rifle.

Still won't work. The lower is a Stag model 6.8. Sorry not 608. Maybe the bolt for a 6.8 upper is larger and comes down closer to the bolt catch? When I pull the charging hangle back and press in the bolt catch I can feel just barely any contact. And when releasing the charging handle the same.

What kind of stock assembly and buffer?Bolt catches should be the same.Check for obstructions in the extension.

the buttstock is a rock river arms adjustable one. My MSG that I bought the rifle from said it was the closest thing to military issue. The buffer is only about3 inches long. Are AR15 ones that long? I've only been around M16s and they are like at least 5 inches long. There are no obstructions in the extension.

Its a carbine buffer using a 6 posistion stock I assume..are you sure the charging handle isnt hitting the hump in the stock when you pull it to the rear?Open up the rifle and see if you can manualy push the carrier back into the tube far enough for the bolt catch to be engaged.

I can pull the charging handle all the way back. The bolt catch just won't go up high enough to block the bolt/bolt carrier from closing all the way. Will I still be able to fire rounds safely. The only thing that is not working is that I cannot lock the bolt/bolt carrier to the rear to check the chamber, but I can do this without the bolt catch.

Take off the upper completeley with no mag in line up the carrier infront of the buffer pushing on the face of the bolt push it in on the buffer and see if the catch can be pushed up in front of the bolt face. Also does the bolt retract into the carrier when you push on it?

Yes. The bolt and bolt carrier can be pushed back and the catch will go in front of the bolt. Yes the bolt does retract into the carrier. Is it not alligned right when the bolt carrier and bolt are in the upper? Thanks for your time and help.

Dont know exact dimensions but it sounds like its an upper issue.See if there are any marks indicating the rear of the carrier key may be hitting something or the charging handle.

PROBLEM FIXED. When the lower was put together there was a wrong piece inserted under the bolt catch in where the spring is. I had someone put it together for me, it was not put together by StagArms. That was the problem. I went to a gunsmith and had them remove the bolt catch and they noticed the problem right away. Everything looked normal until they removed the bolt catch. Thanks for everyones help. It is much appreciated. And I am proud to be in this AR owning family.
