Well. "suffered" through 2 days of Patrol Rifle class for my department. I say "suffered" tongue in cheek since it was on my days off, they paid for the class and the overtime and the ammo!! What more could a guy want! After the typical classroom stuff we got on to blasting away! All in all it was a great class with some great instruction! The M&P performed flawlessly as did the Vickers sling and the OKO site!!! I found the sling especially useful during the "seated fire" drills as well as shooting off-hand. Being able to create that "platform" was way cool. Felt very comfortable throughout the whole 2 day class; even up to the point that we got dumped on during the last day! The OKO was the bomb inside 25! We had to shoot from 100 yards and in so I kicked it on at about the 25 without fail!! Afterwards, one of the instructors applauded the grouping and told me he noticed that I used it half way through.....very encouraging to say the least. I absolutely love the Troy BUI site as well. Way to go S&W!!! Very nice weapon!!

Now, the drama! The first day during the classroom session, the instructor goes over the range rules and requirements etc. He ends it by saying that anyone found to be unsafe will have the rifle pulled and they will be sent home, no questions asked. Well, wouldnt you know it.....during the second day we were going over malfunction drills. The whole "side step, drop to a knee while removing the magazine before locking the bolt back, etc"......and sure enough, one of the students (right next to me I might add) managed to discharge a round inches....INCHES....from their foot!!! I was on my support knee at that point "clearing" my jam when I heard the pop and caught the puff of dirt out of the corner of my eye!! Talk about a pucker factor!!!

Aside from that, a great class!!!!!

awesome man! i would love to have to "suffer" through that as wellhats
im looking to take a class soon if i can find/pay for a good one

i've only been to one, and i'm already addicted. i'm goign to my second as soon as they schedule the next carbine session, and i've already lined up a combat pistol course also.

Yeah, it was pretty cool when they set it up. I had bought the rifle some time ago with the intent of taking the class and using it on patrol. When they set the class up they were like "we have the dates for the class but they are on your days off. You will have to attend the class and we will just pay you...." Um, ok.....twist my arm a bit!!! he

Sounds like you had a great time, and learned more about the capabilties of the AR platform. It also sounds like your department has its head in the right place to set this up. Too many departments are sadly lacking the leadership to make something like this happen. Several threads on 10-8 are devoted to departments who will not sanction their officers taking any fighting classes, or about departments who offer them, but because they are on officers' days off having problems getting them to attend!
