ok so many variations of the ar-15 and aftermarket clones.

after hunting with a 223 for many years it doesnt pack the long range punch that i need and want.

i want a 308 but that would leave me with a dpms clone  (correct)

if i have my newb facts right anything other than .223 and 5.56mm. i would have to buy an aftermarket clone correct

i would prefer to build over buy.

i dont mind going with a clone but would rather have the satisfaction of calling it an ar-15 an not a dpms lr308b or something like that

How about something cheaper than a 308, but still more powerful than 223?

6.8 SPC.

Check out the Variant forum here.

Just get an m1a.  It is a highly accurate rifle and packs a punch with a .308.  I have one and love it.

My friend has an ar10 and I do not like it.  It malfunctions a lot.

You need to spend a little more time researching.
