Hi, I have a Bushmaster (pre-ban(old) 223 16") that is failing to eject.  It was just moving the bolt back 1/4" after firing.  Today I oiled the bolt/bolthead and retested it.  Now it moves the bolt 1/2" back after firing.   In another thread, someone mentioned that it may be gas problems.  So today I removed the handgaurds and it appears that the gas block is leaking.  1/3-1/2 of the gas tube has residue on it.  The section closest to the reciever is clean.

Could this be the problem?

How do I fix it?

Thanks for any and all help,

Residue around the gas tube where it exit’s the FSB is normal. With short stroking problems, for starters I would inspect the gas tube it self for blockage. Shoot some automotive brake cleaner down the gas tube followed by compressed air. Then inspect the carrier key for looseness and blockage. Do the same with the carrier key as you did with the gas tube, brake cleaner then compressed air.

Re-lube the rifle, then test fire.

ETA: Do you regularly clean and maintain this rifle?

Thanks for the info, I will try that later on today when I get off work.

I haven't shot this rifle in a long time.  I do need to get a bore guide and .22 cal one piece rod and clean the barrel.

When I shot it more often I cleaned it regularly.

Any suggestions for regular maintence?

Thanks,

Along this same line, I recently noticed a bit of powder residue along the top of the barrel, adjacent the front sight base.  I hadn't noticed this before, but then I hadn't been looking!  Functionally, the rifle is just fine - no issues.  The rifle is fairly new with less than 1000 rounds through it.

I guess my question is: Is this a normal?  If not, what do I do to correct the issue?

Thanks in advance for the assist!

Regular maintenance for me translates into doing things IAW the military Operators Manual, or as some refer to it.....the -10.
