I got my first AR a couple of months ago and I had a buddy build the gun chest for about $350 out of 3/4 inch Oak. The drawers are made of birch to save a little weight. I haven't finished stainng the inside and finished touching up the felt on the inside yet. Future plans also include a large flat panel TV to sit on top of the chest. I like it quite a bit. Opinions?

Beautiful chest.  I would feel safer with a safe if I had as many sweet guns as you.

Sorry to pop your bubble man. While he has 6 guns and a nice cabinet I am afraid that 6 doesnt begin to count as "As many" for a lot of people! I have 20 some odd rifles just sitting in my closet because I dont want to haul a safe across the country with me when I move!

Someday you too will have more guns than you can use!

Now that is an interesting rifle chest.  Kind of a hidden in plain view storage solution.  This just may have inspired me to come up with something similar for myself.  How high does your chest sit?

I like that chest a lot! That is a very creative idea. I think I'll build one like that, since I already have a traditional gun cabinet

Great idea.  Dimensions?  "Unloaded" weight?

Beautiful work!  It looks very discreet, it looks like a dresser.  My ONLY problem with it is it's probably not fire-proof.    Other than that, way to go!  You could easily make them and sell the shit outta them!!!

Very Nice, discrete storage for a fine collection.  You obviously take yours out and use them.

I hope for everyone's sake that no one breaks into your place and opens your closet.........I spent 10 years taking reports from guys who never thought it could happen to them. And obviously if you have enough money to have 20+ nice rifles, then you have the money for a safe.......and having moved mine all over So Cal and then up to Seattle, it just isn't that big of a deal.......

Just trying to offer some experince so that no one else HAS to go through that kind of situation. hinking.gif

I think the guy is jealous and trying to be inflamatory..Probably has a Raven .25 and 19 airsofts.
That chest rocks.

My 2 cents.

Not trying to be a jerk but you're thinking is the reason so many guns get stolen and it doesn't have to be that way. You don't want a safe because you don't want to transport it cross-country? And they are just sitting in your closet? I've got a dehumidifier going in the summer and I plan on putting a few gell packs in it. In SD We only have to worry about humidity just a few months of the year. Winter is usually pretty dry. I almost went with some other stuff from my brother who works in the plastics division of Raven Industries. They have a similar matt like material that is made of plastic but feels almost like wax fiberous paper. Only I didn't care for the thickness that would prove difficult to work with. (too stiff)

I'll add my 2 cents and then we'll have 4 cents for the jerk to buy another airsoft for his collection.
ETA. BTW...that is a really nice gun chest...good job.

Actually I was not trying to be inflamatory at all, I was not even speaking to the OP. I said it was a nice chest and it is. My closet, while not the best option is the only feasible one at the moment. I will literally be driving to FL in october and I do not wish to try to lug a 1k pound safe down there with my jeep wrangler. My house is well secured and reinforced. It is not burglar proof but then nothing really is. This situation will be remedied when I get to where I am going.

As for the .25 raven and 19 airsoft I am not gonna dignify it with an answer unless you really want a pic, I can dig out the digital camera. Or Rott since you live in Seattle now you can just come by. We are going shooting on the 4th if you want to come along!

Use caution with the felt unless you add a Goldenrod Dehumidifier or some other such animal.

Felt attracts and retains moisture.

Ever seen a dry beaver?
