Hi all my name is Jared Smith I am a long time lurker to this sight, and first time poster, I have a Armalite M-15A4 (first one, and I will never go back to the ak!), and I want to know if I can get a short (like 10-11.5”) upper for it, and how to go about it legally. Also can you use a upper meant for a pistol if you register it? Also any links to help me with this would be very much so appreciated. Jared Smith |

Poke around a bit more - there is a TON of info here... www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=6&f=22&t=199905 |
| I don't know how long your wait will be, but the paperwork is not hard to fill out. As a matter of fact you can go to www.titleii.com and fill out the form I on your computer. It also has instructions for the rest it is a really cool site. When I did mine it only took about 30 days for me to get mine back. I have heard that here lately they are getting it back around 28 days. It all depends on your examiner and how fast you can get finger printed and get your stuff signed by your cheif leo. But check out that site. |
Many other benefits of a Trust, my friend. If this is a home defense weapon and Church is married, he can legally allow his wife access to the weapon if she is an authorized trustee. Trusts aren't just about getting faster approvals or avoiding the hassle of geting fingerprints. I'm a firm believer that a Trust is just about the best way to go for any NFA item. But, opinions do vary. Church, welcome. Glad to have you join us. Mark |
| Thanks guys, I may look into the trust. I had to work today so still have not filled it all out. Can I use a pistol upper on it (with all the paper work) or will I be in violation of the law? Also can anyone help me with some web sites with info on them so I can avoid any dumb mistakes, like what ammo to use and what kind of range can I get from it? I want it mostly for home defense. but enjoy just shooting, for the sake of shooting (although ammo prices kind of make that hard at the moment). |

Yes as long as the upper is in the caliber you specified on your Form 1. It's the lower that's registered as a pistol or SBR, not the upper. From what I've seen pistol uppers are usually advertised as such because they are usually very short, i.e., 6-10" in length or in a differ caliber than .223. Read all you want about the legalities, ammo, etc. right here. I'm sure someone will post a link to the appropriate thread(s) for your research. |
