Hey guys, I need help. Does anybody know if you can print a correctly sized M16A2 zeroing target off the intarnets somewhere? I am off to zero my new armalite (20 inch A2, KISS to the max baby!) on Sunday and I want to use the standard 300m battlesight zero on this guy. I was going to wait until next weekend but my wife's sister's boyfriend (whew that was a tongue twister) is heading off to USMC Basic Training next week. I just met him and he has never fired an AR-15 so I was going teach him some basics (operation, functions check, SPORTS, marksmanship fundamentals) to give him a one up for basic training. I can teach him how to zero and get my new toy sighted in at the same time if I can only find some .mil variety targets in the next 24 hours. Fun shop doesn't have em', all mine are in transit from storage in omaha, and I don't have time to order. Any links or help would be appreciated. Range report to follow hopefully! |

You do need help. 1. You don't need a G.I. target to sight-in your rifle. 2. A G.I. target won't help you in any way. 3. Anything you tell your brother-in-law will be quickly forgotten in the the first 10 minutes of USMC training. 4. Unless you have been trained in marksmanship training, you'll just make things worse for him. *Edit* The USMC will print plenty of correctly scaled targets for him. |
I have been trained in marksmanship...by the Army and the Air Force, and I received other more comprehensive training as well. I am not an idiot. I am not an ex-green-beret sniper delta seal hero but also have been exposed to the exact material he is going to be exposed to. I realize that you do not NEED a G.I. target to sight-in your rifle. In fact I don't usually use and most of my rifles have been sighted in at 50/200 IBZ. I want to use them, especially for teaching a beginner, as the grid's really help them to understand how to make adjustments and why they work. It will also be what he uses in basic. I also just like them. Hopefully that is ok with you. I also don't intend to teach him everything that he is ever going to learn about marksmanship in one day. My point is to make him have some exposure to this material before he is introduced to it in basic. I know that anything I knew how to do before I went to basic meant I slept more that day instead of staying up at night with everyone else trying to learn the shit. And when he is getting screamed at he will be thinking ok cool, I got this I've done it before. I also like to give new shooters a good first experience and a good dose of enthusiasm. He is going to be an aircraft mechanic so its not like he is going to spend every day with a rifle after basic. Taking him now might contribute to him becoming a EBR enthusiast later in life. oh and p.s. he is not my brother-in-law. Please take the time to read before being a dick. I don't know where to download the zeroing target so I can't help there. After 12 years so far in the Corps I have never even seen one. Every year when I go to the range we zero from the 300 yard line. I would say if you just have to teach him something, teach him the wat the sight works on any target available. Just teach him how far the strike of the bullet will be moved at 100 yards for every click of windage, elevation or movement of the front sight post. As already stated though, it will probably hurt more than it helps because at MCRD they will not teach him the same way you do, even though they may present the same information, and that will confuse him. Anyone who feels like schooling me on how the Marine Corps does things, don't bother. Every range in the Corps is ran differently, I am sure that somewhere they use this zeroing target, just nowhere I have shot in my short 12 years. I am just giving my opinion on how to help out and nit hurt a future devil dog. |
Thanks for the info. I think at a minimum just familiarity with functioning, SPORTS, etc. would be good. I'm talking basic stuff like on the 'focus on the front sight post' type of level. Plus he is excited about basic and he's asked me to take him out. I really would like to find a source for those damn targets though. |

I was just a little agitated, its late and its been a long week. Thanks for all of the help guys! You kicks ass! I'll be sure and explain to him that they might approach it differently there but what I'll show him is universal. If nothing else it will make him more confident when he gets to it in basic. Plus, as always, shooting stuff is fun! |

Teach him this. If he knows this and this only he will be miles ahead of the rest of the pack. show him how it works and let him apply it and he will be more confident in what he knows because he will understand how to apply it, not just recite it. I got a handy little chart I use that has the below information as well a compensation for wind chart, detailing how many clicks to compensate for a full value wind and a hlaf value wind at 200 to 500 yards.  No kidding?! Shit, I doubt my supply guy/armorer would give me targets and I'm IN the Guard.

This is known as a recruiting tool for the Guard. They get you to voluntarily come in and ask for something they got you to do something you would have never done. In the South we call that bait. I was given a whole box of them (200) last year. I turn them over and use them to cover the entire target board when I am zeroing new scopes at range. |
