Back when I can my 1911 customized, my gunsmith (a student of Jeff Cooper) warned me about BOPOS: Bolt-on pieces of s..t.

I have the opportunity to buy my first AR. Most on the rack are DPMS M4geries, but there is an Armalite flat-top rifle and an Armalite carbine with an A2 receiver. On the plus side, the carbine is a 16" middie with a rail handguard, for apparently no additional cost.

I am old enough that my eyes are getting stiff and I'm probably going to need an optical sight. I figure that I can either:

1) mount one on the carbine handle - old school style, or
2) Install it forward of the carbine handle with one of those cantilever mounts.
3) Wait for something else or look at the Armalite rifle. I recall maybe seeing a Bushmaster heavy-barrel rifle, too.
(I apreciate the warning in the other thread about DPMS)

The only place that I've ever seen a cantilever optical mount installed is in catalogs. I don't recall seeing one in photos here. So does this thing pass the sniff test or is it a BOPOS?

I'd appreciate hearing about your experience and observations.
Thanks!
