| Just got a nice new RRA at the local gun show. Had a guy build it for me on the spot and specked it out with all kinds of goodies. All the parts were brand spankin new. When I got it home I broke it down for its initial clean and oil. I noticed that the gas key is not staked. Is this normal for RRA? I thought upper end ARs always staked their gas keys. Do they loctite? Should I expect any problems or have a local gunsmith stake the screws on the key? Your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. |

www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=118&t=320852 Pretty straightforward...just don't bash on it. ![]() bigbore does raise a good point though - better mfrs. such as RRA generally do not have this problem to begin with.

| That's what I thought. He built it from an RRA upper and lower. The lower is the standard with the single stage trigger and the upper is the entry tactical upper. Both were new. I've seen staked gas keys and usually there is a dent of some form on the screws. There's no dent here. Some really small letters on the screws, but nothing looks staked to me. |

Just for my own understanding and so that I have it right, what is being discussed is that the screws that attach the gas key are firmly held in place, by upsetting a little bit of material so that they do not back out? So, should I receive my kit, and these are not staked, just do it myself. |

I'm thinking the same thing. I just called the guy who built it for me and he said it should have been staked and he'd replace it. At least that's good. Does RRA put any letters, numbers, etc on the carrier anywhere? What about the upper or barrel, do they have any markings on them? Thanks! |
I don't think you got an RRA upper/barrel. RRA's barrel codes are under the handguards near the reciever on top of the barrel. They have a numeric system. Thay are not marked near the front sight base like Bushmasters or Colts. Check the industry section. RRA has a forum with a barrel code thread. I'd be wary of some guy building me a rifle at a gun show. They've been known to throw all sorts of shit together and call it a "Genuine RRA" or Colt or whatever. |
Thats not a RRA barrel...... |

Also addressed a couple of times in different sections of the RRA industry forum. We do stake all of our carrier keys. We do use specific barrel markings which are not as described here. We do laser engrave our upper recievers (strippped and assemblies) with "RRA", and our complete upper halves and rifles with the RRA logo. The engraving came about, in part, to help identify factory builds from "built up" upper halves. There is nothing intrinscially bad with a non-factory upper, as long as it is built cforrectly, from the parts it should be made from and is represented as having, and that whomever built it knoew what they were doing, had the proper tools and gauges and used them.
