I will start this question with the disclaimer.
I dont own an AR pistol and dont plan on it. I know this will probably get the guys in dark suits worked up, but im gonna throw out this question anyway.

Whats to prevent me from keeping a pistol upper on a rifle lower? Of course I couldn't leave my house with it. But if I had both an AR pistol and an AR rifle, for home defense purposes only, the shorter pistol upper would be more convienent with the stock for support.

Uh...it's against the law unless you have the tax stamp for the SBR you just created, regardless if it is in your home or not.

Rifle with bbl length < 16" or OAL < 26" = Short Barreled rifle, restricted by the NFA.

Nothing can prevent you from doing an illegal act.

Use some common sense. Dont make an illegal weapon.

I realize its illegal, but other than that, there is nothing to prevent it from happening.

doesn't that kinda make the SBR rules kinda pointless?

Yes, the law is stupid and pointless, but yet it is still the law.

Do you make a habit of breaking federal law?

There's nothing stopping you from doing anything.  If you wanted to right now you could walk naked through the mall.  There are laws against it sure, but nothing is stopping you.
